I Am a Child of God (1): "I am a Child of God"

Prayer:

Song: "I am a Child of God" Have the children repeat the phrase "I am a Child of God".

Opening Activity: Explain that we are all children of God, which is another name for Heavenly Father. "Before we were born on earth we lived in heaven with Heavenly Father. We were spirits there. A spirit is what is inside of us that makes us alive. When we were spirits, we didn't have flesh and bones like our bodies have now, but we looked the same."

  • Toss a bean bag to each child one at a time and say, "I know a child of God named (name)" until each child has had a turn.
  • Picture: Show a picture of a group of children and emphasized how every child looks different, (eyes, skin color, hair color, size, etc.) but each child is a Child of God. Point to each one of the children and ask, "Is this a child of God?"

Story of Moses: "Explain that Heavenly Father is the father of our spirits and we are His spirit children. We don't remember living with Heavenly Father before we came to earth, but we know we are his spirit children because we read it in the scriptures." Tell the children the Story of Moses. You can use this Moses clip art if you wish.

  • Toddler Version: "Moses was a great prophet who lived a long time ago. Tell the children that Moses went to a mountain to pray. Invite the children to pretend to climb a mountain; then have them fold their arms as if praying. Open the Pearl of Great Price to Moses 1:4 and say, 'God said to Moses, thou art my son.' Explain Moses learned he was a child of God."
  • Older Children: Use the more detailed summary shown below from The Golden Seven.

I am a Child of God Necklaces: Have your children color the picture of a boy or girl, while you read them the words at the bottom of the picture, "I am a Child of God." Punch a hole in the top and string yarn through the hole. Tie the yarn and make a necklace.
Testimony: Review principles and bear testimony of them.
