Prophets

Prayer:

Song: "Follow the Prophet" Children's Songbook page 110. We marched around the room and sang this song.

Discussion: I thought the best way to explain a prophet to Easton (26 months) is by saying "The Prophet and Heavenly Father are very best friends. Heavenly Father talks to the prophet, and then the prophet teaches us." Throughout the lesson I would ask, "Who is the prophet's best friend?" And Easton would always reply, "Jesus or Heavenly Father."

Identifying Prophets Game: I bought a Gospel Art Book a while back, which is a spiral bound book of gospel pictures from the New Testament, Old Testament, Book of Mormon, etc. However, you can just click the link and view the pictures online to use in a family home evening. I bookmarked pictures of different prophets Easton would recognize. I showed Easton the first picture bookmarked of Daniel in the Lion's Den. We talked about the picture and I asked Easton to tell me which prophet is in the picture. Then, we talked about an important principle Daniel taught us. We continued in a similar manner. Here are the pictures/prophets we talked about:
  • Daniel in the Lion's Den: Daniel taught us to pray.
  • Jonah and the Whale: Jonah taught us to always obey the commandments (listen to Heavenly Father)
  • Jesus Christ's Baptism: Jesus taught us to be baptized.
  • Nephi on the Ship: Nephi taught us to believe in Jesus Christ.
  • Samuel the Lamanite: Samuel taught us about the birth of Jesus Christ.
  • Joseph Smith: Joseph taught us to read the scriptures.
  • Thomas S. Monson: President Monson teaches us to love one another and to be kind.
  • Noah and the Ark: Noah taught us the importance of following the prophet.

Noah's Ark Shape Sorter: In the activity above, I purposefully chose to talk about Noah last. I found a discounted "Noah's Ark Shape Sorter" and wanted to somehow fit it in to a family lesson. Easton played with this for a long time and wanted to sleep with it during his nap. I love toddlers. We also have a Noah's Ark Felt Set that would be another interactive option to play with today.
