Month #8: SAMUEL (Teach Others about Jesus)

This family home evening lesson is apart of "A Year with the Book of Mormon." Click the link to learn about our other Book of Mormon Heroes.

Prayer:

Song: "I Am Like a Star" Children's Songbook page 163. Optional: Cut out a yellow card stock star and tape it onto a popsicle stick. Have your child(ren) wave them back and forth while singing the song.

Intro: Before the lesson, we talked about Jesus and how some people in the world don't know about Him. That's why we have missionaries - to teach others about Jesus. We can also be "missionaries" at home by teaching our friends about Jesus.

Hero Poster:  This is a picture of our Book of Mormon hero, Samuel. Samuel was a Lamanite prophet. Heavenly Father wanted him to teach the people about Jesus. Let's read more about him...

Story of Samuel: Read the illustrated scripture story, "Samuel Teaches about Jesus". It's a short summary of how Samuel was commanded to teach the wicked Nephites about Jesus. He climbed the city wall and taught them many things about Jesus - including a new star in the sky when Jesus was born. Below is one of three pages.

Activity - Glitter Stars: "One thing Samuel told the Nephites was that Jesus Christ would be born soon and would be the Savior. A NEW STAR would shine when Jesus was born. Some people were angry and tried to hurt Samuel. Others believed his words and wanted to be baptized." We are going to make a star and tape it on the window as a reminder of how Samuel taught others about Jesus. For this craft, you'll need: Card Stock, Contact Paper (I found ours at the Dollar Tree) and Glitter.

1) Fold a piece of card stock in half and cut out a star (as show in this image).

2) Place the card stock (with the star cut out) on a piece of contact paper - sticky side up. Pictured bottom left on the image below.

3) Pour glitter all over the star, making sure the contact paper is completely covered with glitter. Picture bottom right on the image below.

4) Carefully remove the piece of card stock to reveal your star. Add a second piece of contact paper on top of your star (sticky sides together) so the glitter will hold and no where will be sticky. Tape the star onto a window and admire the sun shining through in the day. Note: I apologize for the black rectangles on our star. I used an old piece of card stock with black rectangle ink that transferred onto our contact paper as well.

Hero Card:  Last, we talked about our Hero Card and little things we could do throughout the week (or month) to remember Moroni and be more like him. Our checklist is altered to our toddler needs. After our lesson, I posted our Hero Card and goals on the fridge.
  • Goal #1: Learn "I Am Like a Star" from the Children's Songbook.
  • Goal #2: Watch the living scripture movie, Samuel the Lamanite. If you don't own or want to purchase a movie, you can Watch chapter 40 of the Book of Mormon videos at scripturestories.lds.org.
  • Goal #3: Complete the Chart. Throughout the week (or month) pay special attention to when your child is teaching others of Christ or being an example of Christ. Compliment them and remind them how they are being like our scripture hero. Give them a sticker for doing so - not for bribing purposes, but for doing things on their own. Once they have ten stickers, go out for a special treat.
