FHE: Prophet - General Conference

With General Conference this weekend, I thought it would be fun for my boys (ages: 3 & 22 months) to learn a little something about the prophet and apostles. My boys loved opening the eggs and looking at the pictures inside - each picture goes along with an interesting, kid appropriate fact about the prophet and apostles. We will have this poster board in view during General Conference and plan to keep my little ones busy with these "prophet & apostle bags" while watching the sessions.

Prayer:

Song Options
  • I Belong to The Church of Jesus Christ - we sang this song while my boys shook their egg shakers (plastic eggs filled with rice and taped close).
  • Follow the Prophet - sing the chorus. Have your child(ren) take turns being the leader while holding a picture of President Monson. March around the room, spin, etc.

Introduction: Explain what a prophet is in simple terms. I said something along the lines, "Since Heavenly Father and Jesus don't live on the earth with us, they call a prophet to teach us what to do. Heavenly Father speaks to the prophet and the prophet speaks to us." Do you remember any prophets? I held up a few pictures of prophets that my three would recognize (Daniel, Jonah and Nephi). These are all prophets that lived a long time ago. Next, I held up the picture below and explained when Christ was on the earth, He was a prophet and called 12 disciples to help him teach the people.

Modern Prophet & Apostle Game: The church that Jesus organized is the very same church that we have today (hold up the poster board). We have one prophet - Thomas S. Monson - and 12 apostles just as Jesus did. Let's learn a little bit about President Monson and the apostles. Have your child(ren) draw one egg at a time. Look at the picture, read the simple fact along with the picture and staple it next to the correct person. Here's what you need for the game:
1) Print and cut out the picture cards and staple them onto your cardboard poster board.
2) Print and cut out the fact cards and place each one in a plastic egg - you'll have 15 of them. Place the eggs in a basket or bowl.
3) Have your child draw one egg at a time. Look at the picture, read the simple fact along with the picture and staple it to the correct person. Here's a before and after.

Testimony: Add your testimony and gratitude for a living prophet and apostles today.
