Reverence (2): "Why Animals Can't go to Primary"

Prayer:

Song: "I Will Try to Be Reverent" Children's Songbook page 28. Click here to sing along. We did the actions along with the words found in the nursery manual lesson:

I love my Heavenly Father (put hands over heart)
And I will try to be (point to self)
Reverent when I'm in his house (put fingertips together to form a housetop)
Then he'll be near to me (hug self)

Picture: I showed Easton the picture below (as a review from last week) and reminded him how reverently the family is sitting at church. We discussed folded arms, quiet mouths, listening ears, etc. I think it's good to have a visual for Easton to remember as a way to be reverent.

Story of Moses and the Burning Bush: Next, we read the story of Moses and the Burning Bush
from the golden seven blog. The link has a picture and summary of the story. The summary talks about how Moses was asked to take off his shoes (an act of reverence) before stepping on holy ground and seeing the Savior. Although we don't have to remove our shoes before going to church, we can do a lot of things to show reverence at church. Let's talk about some things we can do to be reverent at church (see next activity).

Reverent Cards Hunt: Before our family home evening, I hid these reverence cards (from the Golden Seven Blog) around the room Easton found one of the cards in the room and we discussed how that body part can show reverence at church. (Hands - keep them to yourself; Ears - listen to teachers, prayers and speakers; Arms - fold arms during prayers; Feet - use quiet feet; Eyes - keep your eyes on your teacher and speakers; Head - bow head during prayers; Legs - Walk quietly; Mouth - Sing and quiet voices). These cards can be used as a matching game as well if you print two sets.

"Why Animals Can't Go to Primary": Easton loved this story and visuals from the Golden Seven Blog. I printed the story and animals and mounted them onto popsicle sticks. The story is about a little boy that wants to take zoo animals to primary. His mother takes the little boy to the zoo, and he realizes that none of the animals are reverent enough for church. "Oh, you monkeys, you can't go to primary because you don't know how to sit still." This story is really cute!
