Letter I: Wiggle Inchworms Alphabet Review, Letter I Book, Letter I Handprint Art (Ice Cream), Letter I Music Time (Day 1)

1) Wiggle Inchworms Alphabet Review from Nuttin but Preschool: You can review letters, shapes or numbers with this activity. I'm really excited to try this with E this year.

  • A medium sized can
  • Printed alphabet and worm cards (from link provided)
  • Bird (either a stuffed animal, puppet or you can pretend to be a bird)
  1. Place all the alphabet and worm cards inside the can. Show your child the letters and worms and explain that they will draw a card from the can and identify the letter. If they draw a worm card, they have to wiggle like worms!
  2. The Catch: While your child is wiggling like a worm, yell, "The Bird is Coming! Hide!" (I would love to have a bird puppet to use and fly around to catch the "worm"). Your child can either actually hide or sit back in his/her spot on the ground.

Wiggle Worm: Use Alphabet Cards
2) Read the Little Letter I Book from The Measured Mom: Talk about the pictures on the pages and identify the letter I.

Letter I Handprint Art (Ice Cream)
  • You can either draw a cone as I did or glue one on from brown construction paper.
  • Paint your child's hand brown and have him/her stamp it onto the ice cream cone.
  • Dip your child's finger in red paint and have him/her stamp it onto the ice cream as a cherry.

4) Letter I Time:
  • The Itsy Bitsy Spider: Use actions and/or this magnet board to sing the song.
The itsy bitsy spider
Went up the water spout.
Down came the rain
And washed the spider out.
Out came the sun
That dried up all the rain.
And the itsy bitsy spider
Went up the spout again.

  • If You're Happy and You Know It: Have your child draw a Mr. Potato Head body part from a paper bag. Which ever part you draw, incorporate into the song. (ie: clap hands, stomp feet, pat your legs, blink your eyes, flap your arms, stick out your tongue, touch your nose, wiggle your ears, etc.)
If you're happy and you know it
(clap your hands)
If you're happy and you know it
(clap your hands)
If you're happy and you know it
And your face will surely show it
If you're happy and you know it
(clap your hands)
  • Insect Song from Preschool Alphabet: Print insect clipart (from clipart panda) images and tape them onto popsicle sticks. Hold them up and move around while singing this song. Option: You could also make eyes onto your egg shakers (plastic eggs filled with rice) and shake them while singing this song.
Head and thorax, abdomen. Abdomen, abdomen.
Head and thorax, abdomen. That's an insect.

Every insect has six legs, has six legs, has six legs.
Every insect has six legs. That's an insect.

Antennae to feel their way, feel their way, feel their way.
Antennae to feel their way. That's an insect.

Tune: London Bridges Falling Down

  • Ice Cream, Ice Cream (source unknown): Use actions while singing this song.

Ice cream, ice cream in a bowl.
(hold hands out in a bowl shape)
Ice cream, ice cream nice and cold.
(pretend shiver)
Ice cream, ice cream what a treat!
(clap three times)
Ice cream, ice cream good to eat!
(rub tummy)
