Letter L: Booklist

A list of our favorite Letter L Books:

Tawny Scrawny Lion by Kathryn Jackson: This was the most requested book to read this week. It came with a CD read along, which my boys (ages 3, 1) enjoyed. It's about a scrawny lion that eats everything he runs after, but no matter how much he eats he is never full and remains scrawny. One day the animals talk a rabbit into talking with the lion. The rabbit counts his rib bones and invites him to dinner before talking. The lion is disappointed when he finds out he's eating "carrot stew" for dinner, but is in for a good surprise.

Library Lion by Michele Knudsen: This book is about a lion who loves the library. No one quite knows what to do with a lion in library in the library, but if he wasn't breaking any of the rules, he was welcome to stay. The lion started coming to the library everyday and helped dust the encyclopedias, lick envelopes and let children stand on his back to reach a book. One day, the head librarian falls off a stool and isn't able to get up. The lion rushes over to the next room and roars to get the other librarian's attention, when roaring is against the rules. This book teaches about following the rules, but every once in a while there is an exception.. like if someone needs help.

Leo the Late Bloomer: My boys (ages 3, 1) loved reading this book along with the supplemental CD. The book is about a tiger, named Leo, who isn't able to do things the other animals are other to do - reading, writing, eating cleanly, etc. His parents patiently wait until he "blooms" or is ready. This book teaches that kids learn things in their own time, some earlier or later than others.

Lost! by David McPhail: This book is about a bear who is lost in the city. The bear feels alone with the tall city buildings. A little boy comes along and offers to help the bear find his home and eventually they find their way to a forest. Once they get there, the little boy feels alone with the tall trees. Not to worry, the bear offers to help the boy find his home. This book teaches about friendship and helping others.

There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly by Pam Adams: Both my boys love this classic story of an old lady who swallows a fly. I don't know why she swallowed a fly. To get rid of the fly, she decides to swallow a spider to catch the fly, a bird to catch the spider, a cat to catch the bird and so forth. I like that this book uses so much repetition.

Light by Donald Crews: This book is about all the different things that give off light. The text is short and simple and it's a quick read. We played with our lite brite after reading this book.

The Lorax by Dr. Seuss: This book is much longer than the others, but my three really loved the story of The Lorax. It's about a man who is off to seek his fortune. He finds a town with the most beautiful truffala trees, whose leaves are soft as silk. He cuts down one of the trees and makes a "thneed" and it becomes the most popular item in town and everyone has to have one. However, The Lorax appears to him and urges the man to stop cutting the trees! This book teaches about greed. We also checked out the movie, The Lorax, from the library to watch this week.

Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney: After being tucked into bed by his mama, little llama starts to worry when she goes downstairs. He calls for his mama and hollers for her when she doesn't come right away. This book teaches little ones not to worry, and mama is always near.

Little Blue and Little Yellow by : This book is about two best friends, little blue and little yellow. They play together every day and one day decide to give each other a hug. When they hug, they don't only get stuck together, but they turn green! This book teaches about color mixing and friendship.

The Very Lazy Ladybug by Isobel Finn & Jack Tickle: My boys and I both loved this book! It's about a lazy ladybug who likes to sleep all day and has never learned to fly. As she searches for a new place to sleep, she lands on a kangaroo, but the kangaroo is too jumpy. The ladybug jumps onto a tiger, but the tiger tiger roars too much. The ladybug lands on a series of animals until she finds a place on an elephant's trunk. See what happens when the elephant sneezes!
