Glowing Letters Tutorial

This activity was so much fun! I found a similar idea on Growing a Jeweled Rose. You'll need to plan a few days in advance, as this activity requires time for the paint to dry on the pasta. If you look closely, our pasta is actually mini letters, which was perfect for our Letter L Theme this week.

SUPPLIES:

  • 8 packs "Moderna Letters" (pictured below). I found ours at Walmart in the Mexican Isle. It was 37 cents a pack. The packs are fairly small.
  • Ziplock Bags
  • Sargent Washable Florescent Paint. I bought our paint at Walmart for $2.97.
  • Water
  • Black Light
  • Optional: Neon Cups, Glow Sticks (from the Dollar Tree) or other items for enhanced play

DIRECTIONS:

1) Place 2 cups of Moderna Letter Pasta (shown below) into a ziplock bag, using one bag per color of pasta you'd like to make.

2) Add the entire container (about 1 tablespoon) of the florescent paint and 2-3 tablespoons of water into the ziplock bag.

3) Zip the bag closed and shake the pasta until all the pasta is coated evenly with paint. Set out to dry. Repeat instructions for additional colors. I had our pasta dry in the open ziplock bags and it took two days to dry. You can also dry the pasta on a cookie sheet.

4) When you're ready to play, place the dried pasta in a shallow plastic bin. The top picture is without the black light and the bottom picture is with the black light.

5) We added neon cups, glow sticks and Letter L Picture Cards (from The Measured Mom) to play with. The pictures don't give justice to how cool this sensory bin looked under a black light!
