Letter N: Booklist
A list of our favorite Letter N Books:
The Perfect Nest by Catherine Friend: This was my favorite and one of my kid's favorite books of Letter N. It's about a cat who builds the most perfect nest in hopes to catch an egg to make an omelet. A chicken comes along and lays an egg. Just as the cat's mouth starts to water, a duck comes by and boots the chicken off the nest and lays an egg of her own. Just as the duck gets comfortable, a goose comes a long and boots the duck off the egg and lays an egg of her own. The three birds fight over the nest and the cat does everything he can think of to get them off the nest to eat their eggs.
Night in the Country by Cynthia Rylant: This was another favorite of ours. "There is no night so dark, so black as night in the country. And while the people dream of daytime things, the nighttime world awakens." Owls swoop, frogs croak, a rabbit patters, and in the yard an apple falls - pump! - from the tree. And when the sun comes up, the nighttime animals spend a day listening to you.
Nini Here and There by Anita Lobel: My boys love cats, so a story about a cat is right up their alley. This book is about a cat, named Nini, who notices her owners packing up their things. After laying on a suitcase and stretching over shoes in hopes the packing with stop, Nini is put into a suitcase where she falls asleep dreaming of adventures. Just then, the suitcase opens up and Nini notices she is in a new home. Although everything is new, she knows it will be okay. This book teaches that change is okay.
Chicka Chicka 1, 2, 3 by Bill Martin Jr.: We had to have a numbers book included in our booklist, since numbers starts with Letter N. This is very similar to "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" other than it's about numbers, not letters. It was great for my three, because he knows and recognizes a lot of numbers. It goes through numbers 1-20, then 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 80, 90 and 100.
The Best Nest by P.D. Eastman: This book teaches about being happy with what you have. It's about a mother bird who hates (we used "didn't like") her old nest. The two birds venture off to find a new nest, but no where works until they come to a church window, where they unknowingly build a nest on the top of the church bell. As the bell rings at noon, the mother bird flies away! The father bird looks for her and can't find her anywhere. Read to find out where he finds her.
The Nose Book by Al Perkins: This book is a cute rhyming book about all different kinds of noses.
A Nest Is Noisy by Dianna Hutts Aston: This book is a little lengthy, but we enjoyed looking at the pictures of all different kinds of nests from bee hives, to muddy alligator nests, to tiny hummingbird nests.
The Nutcracker by Susan Jeffers: This is a classic story that every child should know. It's about a girl who receives a nutcracker on Christmas Eve. That night, she has a dream and the nutcracker comes to life and fights the mouse king. The nutcracker sees the girls character and turns into a handsome prince.
