Letter O: Booklist
Here's a list of our favorite Letter O books:
Little Hoot by Amy Krouse Rosenthal: This is a story about a little owl who loves most everything, except bedtime. Every night his parents make him stay up late when all he wants to do is go to bed like his other friends. When it's finally bedtime his parents want him to wait for a drink of water and a bedtime story, but Little Hoot is already fast asleep.
Owl Moon by Jane Yolen: This story is about a father and son that go out on a winter night to search for an owl. I love the how descriptive the author's words are in this story. It's an experience the boy never forgets.
I'm the Biggest Thing in the Ocean by Kevin Sherry: Of course my three loves this book, because he loves to feel big. It's about squid that swims around the ocean pointing out how much bigger he is than these mussels, turtles, a shark, etc. when suddenly he gets swallowed by a whale. As he's in the whale's stomach he looks around and exclaims, "I'm the biggest thing in this whale!"
An Octopus Followed Me Home by Dan Yaccarinio: This is a cute story about a little girl that loves to bring pets home. When she asks her father if she can keep the octopus, he reminds her of all the other pets in the house (the penguins taking up the ice box, the two elephant garage, etc.) and asks her to return it. Although she's sad returning the octopus to the ocean, a new friend follows her home.
Uh-Oh Octopus! by Elle van Lieshout: This book was a family favorite and read often at our house this week. It's about an octopus who returns to his cave one day to find a giant tail in his cave! First he is upset thinking someone has stolen his cave and asks his friends for advice. One friend mentions arguing, another mentions fighting and another stinging the tail. However, the octopus decides the best option is to use kind words and ask the giant tail to kindly leave.
Out of the Ocean by Debra Frasier: This book is informational of all the many special things one can find at the ocean. Some will be small enough to fit in your hand, like shells and sea glass. Others, like the sun and the sky and waves, will be too big to carry home. This book made me wish we lived near an ocean.
Octopus Opposites by Stella Blackstone: This is a quick read about different animals and opposites. We loved the colorful pages and learning about opposites.
Pete the Cat Old MacDonald Had a Farm by James Dean: I debated putting this book in our Letter O booklist, because it seems like more of a Letter F book to me. However, it was perfect this week as we learned a new version of this song, "Old McDonald Had an Ocean" this week.
Owen by Kevin Henkes: This book is about a little boy, Owen, who is very attached to his blanket. As Owen is starting school, his parents try all sorts of things to help him detach from his blanket, when finally they come up with a solution good for everyone.
Over in the Ocean in a Coral Reef: This is a darling counting book about different types of animals in the ocean. We enjoyed the illustrations and learning about numbers.
