Month #2: ENOS (Prayer)

This family home evening lesson is apart of "A Year with the Book of Mormon." Click the link to learn about our other Book of Mormon Heroes.

Prayer:

Intro: Discuss what it means to pray. Review the order of prayer (if needed) and make sure your children know that Heavenly Father loves us and listens to our prayers.

Song: "A Prayer Song" from the Children's Songbook. This song includes everything a toddler needs to know about prayer - we bow our heads, fold our arms, close our eyes and talk to Heavenly Father.

Hero Poster: Today we will be learning about a new Book of Mormon hero, named Enos. We'll learn about what happened when he prayed and how we can be more like him. Hang this picture up on the fridge after the lesson as a reminder of prayer.

Story of Enos: I held up a picture of Enos from our Gospel Art Book, while summarizing the story of Enos. You could also print and read the short summary of Enos from lds.org OR just scroll through the pictures on your laptop, while reading the story. Make sure to apply this story to the children's lives. Teach them that they can pray just like Enos and Heavenly Father hears and answers their prayers.

Activity: Make Play Dough Pretzels and play with play dough afterward. Did you know pretzels remind us of prayer? Teach your children how by reading the first image below. I was thinking about making home made pretzels, but decided to go the easier route with play dough.

Hero Card & Goals: Last, we reviewed our hero card. We talked about our goals for the month and how we can be more like our hero, Enos. Here's our monthly checklist, adapted to our toddler needs.
  • Goal #1: Learn "A Prayer Song," which we sang at the beginning of our lesson today. I love how this song teaches all the necessary things a toddler needs to know about prayer.
  • Goal #2: Watch chapter 11 of the illustrated Book of Mormon series at lds.org.
  • Goal #3: We are working on having my two year old say his own prayers. I made a prayer chart with stickers. Again, we won't bribe him with a sticker to say a prayer, but instead give him the choice to say a prayer and if he agrees, then we will reward him for his choice. Once he says nine prayers, with or without help, we will go out for pretzels in the mall.

Testimony: Share a time Heavenly Father answered your prayer with your children. Add your testimony afterward.
