Month #1: NEPHI (Obedience)
This family home evening lesson is apart of "A Year with the Book of Mormon." Click the link to learn about our other Book of Mormon Heroes.
Prayer:
Intro: Before the lesson, talk about the word "obedience". To obey means to do what someone asks you to do. When we obey, it keeps us safe and happy. We talked about why we have to wear helmets riding bikes and hold hands in the road. It's important to obey our parents and Heavenly Father.
Song: "Nephi's Courage" Children's Songbook page 120. We're planning on singing this song randomly throughout the month as a reminder of our Book of Mormon Hero!
Hero Poster: This is a picture of our Book of Mormon hero, Nephi. We are going to talk about how Nephi was obedient to his parents and Heavenly Father. Do you remember any stories about Nephi from the Book of Mormon? At the end of the lesson, hang this poster on the fridge or in your child's bedroom.
Story of Nephi: Read the illustrated scripture story, "Journey to the Promised Land". It's a short summary of how Nephi obeys Heavenly Father as he's commanded to get the scriptures (brass plates). Then, it relates how we can be like Nephi and keep the commandments. Pictured is one of three pages.
Hero Card: Last, we talked about our Hero Card and little things we could do throughout the week (or month) to remember Nephi and be more like him. Our checklist is altered to our toddler needs. After our lesson, I posted our Hero Card and goals on the fridge.

Activity: Build Your Own Boat. After talking about how Nephi was obedient and built a boat, we made one! Click the link to view a boat tutorial. If you have extra time, your child could paint the craft sticks of the boat before assembling it. Take the boat to float down a nearby stream (weather permitting) or in the tub! Note: I couldn't find corks, so we used styrofoam balls. Good enough.
- Goal #1: Learn "Nephi's Courage" from the Children's Songbook.
- Goal #2: Watch the living scripture movie, Nephi and The Brass Plates. If you don't own or want to purchase a movie, you can Watch chapters 2-9 of the Book of Mormon videos at scripturestories.lds.org.
- Goal #3: "Nephi's Obedient Chart". My two year old will earn stickers for being obedient throughout the week (or month). I like when my two does something on his own to be obedient, instead of being bribed by a sticker. I'll always compliment the action and say something along the lines, "You got baby a diaper like you were asked. You are obedient just like Nephi!" Once he earns nine stickers, we'll go out for ice cream.
