Hatching Alligator Eggs

Hatching Alligator Eggs is the simple baking soda and vinegar science, but this time we added a special ingredient to make TONS of bubbles when the eggs hatch. You'll need to plan a day in advance, so there's time for the eggs to dry overnight.

Step One: Fill a large bowl with baking soda. We used four to five cups of baking soda.

Step Two: Add squirts of our special ingredient - blue dawn dish soap - to the bowl. This is optional - if you don't want to add dish soap, check our our Leprechaun Rocks (scroll to bottom of post).

Step Three: Add water little by little to the bowl, mixing with your hands while you go. You want the mixture to be damp, not too wet and not too dry. You should be able to form a ball and squeeze it with no water dripping out. Add more baking soda if this happened to you ;) Optional: If you'd like some color, mix in food coloring at this point.

Step Four: Form balls, hiding one toy alligator inside. We also hid plastic Letter A's I found at the Dollar Store. Place the "eggs" on a cookie sheet to dry overnight.

Step Five: Once your ready to use the eggs, hide them around the yard. Place a bowl of hatching alligator egg solution (vinegar) in your backyard and once your child finds an egg, have him/her drop the egg in the bowl. Watch your child's reaction when the egg bubbles and bubbles. Use a spoon to scoop out the baby alligators and some water to wash them off.
