Saint Patrick's Day 2016
SUNDAY: We keep it pretty simple on Sundays. Easton woke up to a knock on the door - who could it be on a Sunday morning? Easton ran over to the door, opened it, and met our most recent talked about visitor - Silly McGilly! Silly McGilly is the Leprechaun that will be at our home this week offering Saint Patrick's Day books, activities, crafts and chocolate gold coins. Today he showed up on our doorstep with his very own book and box of Lucky Charm's Cereal.
MONDAY:
1) Morning Surprise: Silly McGilly brought us Saint Patrick's Day Books & Green Bubbles.
2) Breakfast: Silly McGilly colored our French Toast and Milk green!
3) Saint Patrick's Day Songs: In place of a craft, we learned two Saint Patrick's Day Songs while eating breakfast today. We learned Five Green Shamrocks (free download) and Five Little Leprechauns (create an account for a free download). We'll go over these songs throughout the week.
4a) Activity: Decorate Shamrock Cookies - We were invited to a play group today and the kids decorated darling shamrock cookies.
4b) Activity: Saint Patrick's Day Themed Tub - Silly McGilly put foam shamrocks (they stick to the side of the tub when wet) and green glow sticks in our tub to play with today! The shamrocks and glow sticks are from the Dollar Store.
5) Chocolate Coins: Throughout the day, Easton found Silly McGilly holding a gold, chocolate coin. I would comment and praise Easton's positive behavior saying something along the lines, "Silly McGilly probably brought that coin because you shared a toy with Connor! Good Job!"
TUESDAY:
1) Morning Surprise: Silly McGilly brought us a green slinky today!
2) Breakfast: Silly McGilly colored our Pancakes and Milk green!
3) Craft: Shamrock Stamping - I cut a green pepper in half and we used the bottom half to stamp "shamrocks" today. Easton dipped the the pepper in green paint and stamped it onto a piece of white paper.
4) Activity: Alphabet Coin Hunt - Silly McGilly wrote letters on round office stickers and stuck them on plastic gold coins. He hid the coins all around the house. I gave Easton a brown paper sack and when he found a coin, he identified the letter and placed the coin in the sack. At the end of the hunt, Easton found Silly McGilly in the bathroom. He had turned the toilet water green and was holding a gold, chocolate coin for Easton to eat!
5) Chocolate Coins: Throughout the day, Easton found Silly McGilly holding a gold, chocolate coin. I would comment and praise Easton's positive behavior saying something along the lines, "Silly McGilly probably brought that coin because you shared a toy with Connor! Good Job!"
WEDNESDAY:
1) Morning Surprise: Silly McGilly brought us Saint Patrick's Day glasses today!
2) Breakfast: Silly McGilly colored our Scrambled Eggs and Milk green!
3a) Craft #1: Shamrock Ice Painting - Silly McGilly used a Shamrock Ice Mold and filled the shamrocks with green food coloring and water. He taped a craft stick (cut in half) upright in the water - see picture below - and waited overnight for the water to freeze. In the morning, we used the frozen shamrocks to paint. After Easton was "done" I showed him how salt and warm water make the frozen shamrock's melt. Easton loved this part of the day!
3b) Craft #2: Leprechaun Paper Plate Mask - We had extra time today, so Easton painted a paper plate orange. After the paint dried, I cut a circle out of the middle of the plate and stapled a hat (Easton helped me glue the pieces together) to the top of the plate. Easton poked his head through the plate, looking like a darling, little leprechaun.
4) Activity: Find & Fill the Fizzing Pots - Silly McGilly hid Saint Patrick's Day Pots (filled with baking soda and food coloring) around the house. Easton was so excited to find them! Once the pots were all found, Easton put them on a cookie sheet and squirted vinegar into the pots. He loved watching the bubbly reaction as the pots overflowed!
5) Chocolate Coins: Throughout the day, Easton found Silly McGilly holding a gold, chocolate coin. I would comment and praise Easton's positive behavior saying something along the lines, "Silly McGilly probably brought that coin because you shared a toy with Connor! Good Job!"
THURSDAY (Saint Patrick's Day):
1) Morning Surprise: Silly McGilly planned a Saint Patrick's Day Scavenger Hunt for Easton. At the end of the hunt, Easton found a pot filled with gold, chocolate coins. Click the link to print the clues.
2) Breakfast: Silly McGilly colored our Oatmeal green!
3a) Craft #1: Leprechaun Binoculars - These were adorable! We used them to find our Magic Leprechaun Rocks (see activity below). We taped two empty toilet paper rolls together. I cut strips of colored paper and we taped them around our binoculars. We hole punched a few holes at the top of the binoculars, strung and tied a piece of green yarn together, so Easton could wear the binoculars around his neck. Click the link for a tutorial.
3b) Craft #2: Shamrock Paper Plate Hats - I drew a shamrock design on a paper plate and Easton painted the plate green with a large sponge brush. When the paint dried, I cut around the shamrock design to make a hat. Click the link for a tutorial.
4) Activity: Magic Leprechaun Rocks - These were for sure the highlight of our day! Easton LOVED this activity and could have found these rocks all day long. Last night, I mixed baking soda and water together in a large bowl until it made a paste. The paste consistency should be just wet enough to mold a ball and have it stay together. I added a bunch of food coloring to the paste and hid plastic gold coins in the middle as I molded the "rocks" together. The rocks dried overnight and Silly McGilly hid them in the morning. As Easton found them, he threw them into a pot filled with magic leprechaun water (vinegar) and loved watching the bubbly reaction. Before long, the gold coins floated to the top of the vinegar. Easton traded in five plastic gold coins for a real chocolate coin from Silly McGilly. Click the link for a tutorial.
5) Chocolate Coins: Throughout the day, Easton found Silly McGilly holding a gold, chocolate coin. I would comment and praise Easton's positive behavior saying something along the lines, "Silly McGilly probably brought that coin because you shared a toy with Connor! Good Job!"
Happy Saint Patrick's Day!
