Book of Mormon (1): "The Book of Mormon Teaches Me About Jesus"

This lesson is from the current nursery manual, "Behold Your Little Ones." Click the link to view original lesson "The Book of Mormon Teaches Me About Jesus" on LDS.org.

Prayer:

Song: "Search, Ponder and Pray" from the Children's Primary Songbook page 109. We sang the chorus and used the actions below (from the manual):

Search (pretend to open a book), ponder (point to head) and pray (fold arms)
Are the things that I must do. (point to self)
The Spirit will guide, and deep inside (put hand on chest)
I'll know the scriptures are true. (point to head)

Introduction: While holding a Book of Mormon, flip through the pages and explain, "The Book of Mormon teaches us about Jesus." I've noticed that repetition is so helpful with toddlers, so I had my two year old repeat "Book of Mormon" and asked, "Who does the Book of Mormon teach us about?" And he responded, "Jesus".

Visual #1 - Mary Holding Baby Jesus: Hold up the picture below (page 126 in the nursery manual). Point out any details you'd like. Point to the Book of Mormon and explain that the Book of Mormon teaches us that Jesus Christ came to earth. Ask your child, "Who does the Book of Mormon teach us about?"

Visual #2 - Jesus Healing The Nephites: Next, show a picture of Jesus healing the Nephites (page 94 in the manual - pictured below) and explain that the Book of Mormon teaches us that Jesus healed people who were sick. Again, you may ask, "Who does the Book of Mormon teach us about?"

Visual #3 - Jesus Blessing the Nephite Children: Next, hold up a picture of Jesus blessing the Nephite children (page 22 in the manual - pictured below). Teach your child that The Book of Mormon teaches that Jesus blessed the children. Remind your child how much Jesus loves them. You can add as little or as much other information about the pictures as you'd like.

Book of Mormon Coloring Booklet: Before the lesson, print a Book of Mormon Coloring Booklet from the manual (pictured below). Have your child color the booklet as you read the words below each picture. Have your child repeat "The Book of Mormon Teaches Me About Jesus." Tape your booklet to the fridge and point it out throughout the week as a reminder of the lesson. As you walk by ask, "Who does The Book of Mormon teach us about?"

Testimony: I always love adding my testimony at the end of our lessons. It's always something simple. Today I said something along the lines of: "I love the Book of Mormon and know that The Book of Mormon teaches us about Jesus. We learn about his birth, his life, and how much he loves others. I know Jesus loves you very much."
