Letter P: Booklist

A list of our favorite Letter P books:

The Caterpillar and the Polliwog by Jack Kent: This book is about a caterpillar that goes around telling everyone that she's going to turn into something else one day. The polliwog is intrigued and later finds out he's going to turn into something else one day, too, and assumes it will be a butterfly. As the caterpillar spins her cocoon, the polliwog anxiously waits until he looks in the reflection and realizes he's a beautiful frog.

Perfectly Percy by Paul Schmid: This it the cutest story of a little porcupine who loves balloons. But, there's one problem.. Every time she gets a balloon it pops on her sharp quills. She's determined to find a solution to fix the problem. We did a cute craft going along with this book you can view here

Pete's a Pizza: This is a story about a boy, named Pete, who was hoping to play baseball outside with his friends, but it started to rain. In hopes to cheer Pete up, his father decides to make Pete into a human pizza. First, he kneads the dough. Then, he throws the dough up in the air. Next, he adds tomatoes (but they're really just checkers). I love the humor in this book. It made me want to make my kids into a human pizza.

Pigs Love Potatoes by Anika Denise: This book is about a pig family who love potatoes. One by one, the children (and neighbors!) come in and ask the mama for potatoes. They help wash the potatoes, peel them, and eat them. The mama only requires one thing once they're done... a kiss on the cheek and to clear their plates.

The True Story Of The 3 Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka: This book tells the wolf's side of the classic story of the Three Little Pigs. Have you ever wondered if the wolf was framed for something he didn't really do? This book is a fun twist on the Three Little Pigs. My boys loved it. We did a craft along with this book you can view here.

The Pigeon Wants a Puppy! by Mo Willems: This was one of the most requested books to read from our booklist, and we all loved it. It's about a pigeon who wants a puppy, but doesn't quite understand what that entails. The pigeon says the funniest things and has a conversation with the reader. We love the humor in this book.

Shiver Me Letters - A Pirate ABC by June Sobel: This was another book that was requested A LOT to read this week. It's about pirates that are on a hunt to find all the letters of the alphabet. The find them in the water, buried in the sand, in a treasure chest, etc. It's a great letter review book and my boys love pirate stories. My boys LOVED this Pirate Alphabet Hunt to go along with this book.

Piggies by Audrey Wood: We loved this book, because it goes along with the Five Little Piggies action rhyme. You know the one... "This little piggy went to market, this little piggy stayed home, this little piggy ate roast beef, this little piggy ate none, but this little piggy went WEE WEE WEE all the way home."

Pigsty by Mark Teague: This book is about a little boy that doesn't like to clean his room. However, the more messy it gets, the more pigs show up. Eventually there are so many pigs and so many things tossed around his room, that he hardly has room to sleep on his bed. He finally realizes that his room needs to be cleaned and asks the pigs to help him before they leave.

The Princess And The Pea by Janet Stevens: This was another highly requested book to read this week. It's a spin on the classic story, only with animals. The queen is on the hunt to find a "real princess" for her son to marry. They go all over the world to find one, but none are quite good enough. One night a princess shows up at the palace and the queen places a pea under her mattresses. The princess can't sleep the entire night. "Only a real princess would have such delicate skin to notice a pea under the mattress." It's a quick read and ours came with a read along CD, which my boys love.

Tacky the Penguin by Helen Lester: Another book my boys loved reading this week! It's about an island full of "perfect penguins". All except Tacky. Tacky is an odd bird and does things differently than all the other birds. However, his odd nature is extremely helpful when hunters come. We loved the humor in this story. To go along with this book, we made a Snowy Penguins bin for sensory play this week. My boys LOVED it.

Pirates of the Sea by Brandon Dorman: My boys are way into pirates right now, so they really enjoyed reading about these pirates' adventure to find gold. It uses a lot of pirate vocabulary, but my boys didn't seem to mind. We loved the illustrations and learned The Pirate Song to go along with this book.

Too Many Pumpkins by Linda White: This is a bit longer book, but I read it during lunch one day and my boy didn't seem to mind the length. It's about a woman who is sick of pumpkins. One day a truck full of pumpkins drives by and a pumpkin splatters in her front yard. She ignores the pumpkin all winter and in the spring she realizes her entire front yard is covered in pumpkins! Even though she dislikes pumpkins, she decides to bake them and turn them into yummy treats for the town.

Press Here by Herve Tullet: We own this book and my boys (especially my three) love it. It's a book that involves child interaction. "Push here." The child pushes the yellow dot and it turns into three yellow dots on the next page. "Now rub the dot on the right." The child rubs the dot on the right and the dot turns blue on the next page. Etc.
