Month Six: ABISH (I Can be a Missionary)

Image
This family home evening lesson is apart of "A Year with the Book of Mormon." Click the link to learn about our other  Book of Mormon Heroes . Prayer : Song :  " I Hope They Call Me on a Mission " from the Children's Songbook. We shook egg shakers (plastic eggs filled with rice and taped close with electric tape) while we sang this song. Hero Poster : Hold up the picture below and tell your child(ren).. Today we will learn about a new Book of Mormon hero,  Abish . She is one of the few women mentioned in the Book of Mormon. Abish's father taught her to believe in Jesus Christ. In her city, not many people believed in Jesus. After Ammon came to her people and taught King Lamoni, Abish knew that Heavenly Father wanted her to share the gospel with the people. She was finally able to tell everyone about Jesus. Missionaries :  I normally tell a more detailed story about our BOM hero, but there isn't much else we know about Abish.  So, w...

Family Home Evening: The Priesthood

Image
For other Family Home Evening lessons, search our  Family Home Evening Index .  Prayer: Intro: Today we are going to talk about "The Priesthood." Invite your child(ren) to say this word with you. The priesthood is God's power. He gives the priesthood to older boys and men to bless and help others. (We compared "power" to Elsa from Frozen. Just as Elsa has power to make snow and ice, boys/men with the priesthood have power to do certain things.) Let's talk about what things you can do with priesthood power... Priesthood Keys & Locks Game: Before our FHE, I printed five picture examples of how men with the priesthood can use their priesthood power: Baby Blessing  (OR show a picture of your kids the day of their blessing) Taking the Sacrament Baptism Jesus Healing a Blind Man Marriage (I used a picture of my husband and I) On the back of the pictures I taped a colored lock. I placed the matching colored keys in a brown paper s...

Ravioli with Creamy Sun-Dried Tomatoes & Basil Sauce

Image
My personality type is to find a food blog that I enjoy, scroll and pin every recipe that looks delicious (and ones that I actually see myself making), and have a list of news meals to use for the next couple of months. The only problem is that EVERY single recipe looks amazing on Cooking Classy . She has the most beautiful pictures and I wanted to make every single one of them. We started with this Roasted Cauliflower Soup  (oh boy, this was good!) and now onto Ravioli with Creamy Sun-Dried Tomatoes & Basil Sauce . I have always loved the flavors of sun dried tomatoes, so I knew I'd love this. We used canned tomatoes (I normally hate tomatoes, but this worked for me!) instead of boiling and peeling. Rating: 10/10 Ingredients: 1 (20 oz.) package refrigerated four-cheese ravioli  1 (9 oz.) can of diced tomatoes 3/4 cup sun-dried tomato halves in oil, drained (about 13 halves) 2 tablespoons butter 4 cloves garlic, minced 2 1/2 tablespoons flour 1 3/...

Letter L Activities (ages: 3 & 20 mo.)

Image
Here's what our week looked like for my three and twenty month old:  Read, Read, Read . I love reading to my kids on a daily basis. I'll usually alternate reading during a meal time, before naps or randomly in the day. I checked out our  Letter L Booklist  at the library a week in advance. The picture above shows our very favorite books, but you view more great Letter L books by clicking on the booklist link.  Read Letter L Book . We also love to read these  Little Letter Books  from The Measured Mom. For my three, we focus on the big and little letters at the beginning of each page. My 20 month old especially loves these books! He enjoys looking at the pictures and repeating the words after me on each page.  Letter L Songs & Rhymes . This year, I'm putting together an interactive set of songs & rhymes for each letter of the alphabet. My three and my 19 mo. old had...

Lava Lamp Science

Image
I found this activity at Growing a Jeweled Rose . It was so easy to put together and only requires three ingredients, one being water. All the supplies can be found at The Dollar Tree. Both my boys (ages 3, 1) really enjoyed making these lava lamps. They helped me add the oil and water and my one was so excited about the "bubbles". We made these as a part of our Letter L Activities this week. SUPPLIES : Clear Container (I found hard plastic cups at The Dollar Tree) Water Baby Oil (Dollar Tree) Alka Seltzer Tablets (look for the off brand at the Dollar Tree) Optional: Food Coloring DIRECTIONS : 1) Fill your container 3/4 full of baby oil. Fill the remaining 1/4 with water. Make sure to leave a little space at the top of the cup, so the reaction doesn't bubble over.  2) Add multiple drops of food coloring of choice. Wait a minute for the food coloring to settle to the bottom of the cup.  3) Add broken Alka Seltezer tablets to the lava lamp...

Glowing Letters Tutorial

This activity was so much fun! I found a similar idea on Growing a Jeweled Rose . You'll need to plan a few days in advance, as this activity requires time for the paint to dry on the pasta. If you look closely, our pasta is actually mini letters, which was perfect for our Letter L Theme this week. SUPPLIES : 8 packs "Moderna Letters" (pictured below). Letter L: Booklist

Image
A list of our favorite Letter L Books: Tawny Scrawny Lion by Kathryn Jackson: This was the most requested book to read this week. It came with a CD read along, which my boys (ages 3, 1) enjoyed. It's about a scrawny lion that eats everything he runs after, but no matter how much he eats he is never full and remains scrawny. One day the animals talk a rabbit into talking with the lion. The rabbit counts his rib bones and invites him to dinner before talking. The lion is disappointed when he finds out he's eating "carrot stew" for dinner, but is in for a good surprise.  Library Lion by Michele Knudsen: This book is about a lion who loves the library. No one quite knows what to do with a lion in library in the library, but if he wasn't breaking any of the rules, he was welcome to stay. The lion started coming to the library everyday and helped dust the encyclopedias, lick envelopes and let children stand on his back to reach a book. One day, th...
