Month #5: AMMON (be a good example)

This family home evening lesson is apart of "A Year with the Book of Mormon." Click the link to learn about our other Book of Mormon Heroes.

Prayer:

Intro: Before our lesson today, we talked about what an "example" means and more specifically about being a good example. I have two boys (ages: 3 & 1), so this summary was perfect for my three year old. "An example is someone who shows other what to do. A leader. Have you noticed how your little brother copies everything you do? You're an example to him. He watches how you act and when you do good things and wants to do the same."

Song"Do as I'm Doing" from the Children's Songbook. Talk about being an example or leader while singing this song. Have one person to be the "example" and choose how to sing the song (clap hands, stomp feet, roll arms, etc.) and have everyone follow what the example does.

Hero Poster: Hold up the picture below and tell your child(ren).. Today we will learn about a new Book of Mormon hero, Ammon. We'll learn about his life and how he was a good example to others.

Story of Ammon: Read through the illustrated scripture story, "Ammon's Good Example" from the friend magazine. Discuss the story as needed. The picture below is one of three pages.

Activity: Good Example or Bad Example? I printed a bunch of "example pictures" I found online. Most of the pictures were good examples, since I want to focus on being a good example, but I also threw in a couple of bad examples. I printed a smiley face and frown face and taped them onto popsicle sticks. As we went through the pictures, my three would hold up the smiley face if it was a good example and frown face if it was a bad example.

Hero Card & Goals: Put together a checklist of goals for the week or month. Our goals are simple, based on our toddler needs.
  • Goal #1: Review "Do as I'm Doing" (the song we sang at the beginning of the lesson) throughout the week or month.
  • Goal #2: Watch the Ammon Living Scriptures Movie. If you don't own or want to purchase this movie, you can watch Chapter 23 of the illustrated Book of Mormon series at lds.org.
  • Goal #3: Remind your children how to be good examples as discussed in the activity above. ie: pray, read scriptures as a family, share toys, give hugs, etc. Don't bribe your child(ren) into getting a sticker. Instead, notice when they doing something great on their own and reward them for it. Once the chart is full, we'll go out for our favorite, ice cream.
