Letter A: A is for Alligator Craft, Hatch Alligator Eggs (Day 5)

1) Read books from the Letter A Booklist. We read There's an Alligator Under My Bed, The Lady with the Alligator Purse, and Alligator Alphabet.

2) A is for Alligator Craft from Crystal & Co: This is another craft that includes the Letter A! You can print a "letter A" as well as an alligator template from the link provided. You need:

  • Blue Construction paper
  • Green Letter A
  • Green Tissue Paper, cut into squares
  • Glue Stick
  • 2 white circles (eyes)
  • 2 black circles (pupils)
  • White Triangles - have your toddler help you cut these out with toddler-safe scissors
  1. Glue your letter A onto a piece of blue paper.
  2. Use a glue stick and put glue over the entire letter A.
  3. Press tissue paper squares (scales) onto the glue.
  4. Glue on eyes and teeth.

3) Hatching Alligator Eggs: I always look forward to Fridays, because they are the day we get to do an extra exciting activity! And this one did not disappoint. Easton LOVED this activity. NOTE: You need to prepare the eggs a day in advance. If you don't want to purchase a set of toy alligators, you can print or draw alligators (small enough to fit inside an egg) on a piece of white card stock and laminate them. Here's what you need:
  • 4 Cups Baking Soda
  • 1 Cup Water
  • Toy Alligators
  • Small, Plastic Letter A's (optional)
  • Food Coloring - We added blue and green
  • White Vinegar (128 oz)

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the baking soda and water. The mixture needs to hold it's consistency when rolled into a ball. Add a little more baking soda or water if needed. You don't want the eggs too wet or too dry.
  2. Add food coloring to the mixture.
  3. Form some of the mixture around an alligator, and create an "egg" making sure the alligator is completely covered. Repeat this step for all of the alligators. You can also make eggs with plastic Letter A's in the middle at this point.
  4. Set the eggs out to dry overnight.
  5. In the morning, pour vinegar into a large bowl/pot and hide the eggs around the yard/house.
  6. Have your child find the eggs and drop them into your magic hatching potion (vinegar). Your child will love watching the eggs bubble and an alligator or Letter A float to the top of the potion.
