Week 13: Jesus Walks on Water

1) Picture of Jesus Walking on Water (Matthew 14:22-33). My mom has this picture hanging up in my old bedroom and it was perfect to use for our family lesson tonight. I pointed out Jesus, the boat and Jesus' friends (disciples) in the boat and briefly told the story. We talked about faith in Jesus and how Jesus can help us. I asked the children, do you think the disciples could walk on water if they had faith in Jesus? Let's find out...

2) Watch the video Wherefore Didst Thou Doubt? Talk about what caused Peter to be afraid (big waves, thunder, and rain). Ask the children to tell about times when they felt afraid and share what helped them. Help them see that faith in Jesus Christ helps us overcome fear.

3) Act out Peter Walking on Water. The object of this activity is for "Peter" to walk across the water keeping his/her eyes on Jesus without being distracted. Even when the rain (snowballs/crumbled paper), thunder (pan lid and spoon banging) and waves (shake a blue blanket) of fear come along, we can look to Jesus and believe in Him. He can help us not be afraid.

Other Ideas:

Object Lesson on Faith - use paper clips to demonstrate how we need Jesus to help us walk on water.

We ran out of time this week, but we were planning on learning about "kindness" and the story of Jesus feeding 5,000. You make paper bag puppets and each day of the week you "feed" the puppet a printable loaf of bread (an act of kindness) as you discuss a kind deed each child did in the day.
