Father's Day



Prayer:

Song: "Daddy's Homecoming" - page 210 from the Children's Songbook.

Father Visual #1 (Heavenly Father): This is a picture of Heavenly Father. We lived with Him in heaven before we came to earth. He is the Father of our spirits. He is real and loves us very much. He wants us to be loving and kind to others. Ask, "How can we talk to our Heavenly Father?" Discuss the importance of prayer and how Heavenly Father listens to our prayers.


Father Visual #2 (Earthly Father): Heavenly Father sent us to earth with loving parents. Ask, "Who is this a picture of?" Dad is the father of our earthly bodies. Dad loves you very much and loves when we are kind and help others. We can show dad we love him by giving him loves, playing with him, and being nice to our siblings. Add any other examples or a story of a time dad showed love to children. I printed and hung this picture up on the fridge as a reminder of our lesson this week and what a great dad we have!


Our Daddy Puzzle: Prior to the lesson, I printed "Our Daddy Puzzle" from The Golden Seven and placed the pieces in a brown, paper sack. Let's put together a puzzle of all the wonderful things dad does for us! My two drew a puzzle piece from the bag and we discussed how each of dad's body parts helps our family. Here are some ideas:

Head: Dad is smart, Reads you books, Sings Songs, Listening Ears, Gives Kisses.
Chest: Hugs you tight, snuggles, loving us, testimony of the gospel, prays for us.
Arms/Hands: Plays with toys, throws you in the air, pitches baseballs, tickles, swims with you.
Legs/Feet: Dad is a hard worker, plays soccer with you, takes you fun places, bikes with you.

  • Daddy Interview: Earlier in the week, I recorded my two as I asked him questions about dad. We watched this tonight as a part of our Family Home Evening. I loved my two's responses and Dad loved it! You can come up with your own questions or click the link for daddy interview questions.


  • Make Grandpa a Father's Day Card: I want our dad's "Father's Day Card" to be a surprise, but why not make a Father's Day card for grandpa as a part of your family home evening? You can find so many ideas on Pinterest, but this year we decided to make the card below. On the left is my 12 month old's handprint and on the right is my two's handprint. You could also paint rocks as a Father's Day gift for grandpa, pictured below.




  • Play "Pin the Tie on Dad": This idea looks really fun to do another year. Click the link to print the father & tie images from a primary singing time.

Ocean Foil Painting

We love foil painting. Last year, my three used monster trucks to paint on foil and this year, my three and 21 month old used q-tips to paint an ocean scene. They both really enjoyed painting and using ocean stickers to complete their ocean. You can view our other Letter O Activities  by clicking the link. Here's what you need: Cardboard Poster Board (I bought mine from The Dollar Tree and cut it into fourths) Tinfoil Tape (I used packing tape, but I'm sure any kind would work) Paint (we used dark blue, light blue and white tempera paint) Q-tips Glitter (optional) Ocean Stickers  (or print ocean clipart to glue on) 1) Wrap a piece of tinfoil around your piece of cardboard. Tape the tinfoil (on the back side of the cardboard) into place. 2) Squeeze paint onto the foil and have your child(ren) swirl the paint around with a q-tip. My 21-month old decided to use his hands to paint (top left), which made the paint lift and chip off a bit when the paint dried.

Update: Did you know I'm posting weekly COME FOLLOW ME ideas and lessons for young children (ages 3-12)? The lessons are short, interactive and lots of fun. Click the link for more details.  I started doing a weekly Family Home Evening lesson when my oldest child turned 18 months old. These lessons teach our family about Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ and the Restored Gospel - we are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The lessons in BLUE are based on principles from the nursery manual, "Behold Your Little Ones" along with supplementary ideas to teach the same principle. The lessons in PINK are from the Sunbeams Manual - which we used at group family home evening lessons at our home. Family Home Evening: Baptism

**Other Baptismal Lessons:  Kit Kat Baptismal Covenants ,  here (includes covenants with pictures) and here (includes baptism jeopardy).  Prayer: Scripture - John 3:5. Explain that Jesus is speaking in this verse and teaching us something we need to do in order to live in heaven again with Heavenly Father and Jesus. Read the verse and explain that "born of water" is referring to baptism. Song: " When Jesus Christ was Baptized " from the Children's Songbook page 102. When Jesus Was Baptized: Use these visuals (shown below) to teach your children about when Jesus was baptized. Each visual has a summary included. I printed the summaries and glued them onto the back of the pictures, so I could show my children the pictures while reading the summary on the back. This lesson contains ideas from the current nursery manual, Behold Your Little Ones. Click the link to view the original lesson, " I Will Obey " from LDS.org.
