As a part of our Geology Unit, we are learning about Volcanoes! We've done so many of the baking soda/vinegar reactions before, I wanted to do something different. I found this Citrus Volcano Idea on Little Bins for Little Hands and knew we had to try it. This activity is so hands on, full of learning skills (knife cutting, hand strength with squeezing fruit, science, exploring the five senses, and a wonderful way to expose children to fruit they may or may not have tried before - I never thought in my wildest dreams my six year old would try grapefruit). Last December, I was asked to speak at my sweet niece's baptism. As I was looking for ideas, I came across a Kit Kat Object Lesson from Strong Armor and knew it was exactly what I should talk about. It's basically a "KIT" that describes the three covenants we make at baptism (one starts with a -K- the other with an -A- and the other with a -T-. I will always look at Kit Kats differently now! We had the best Valentine's Day, full of family time, yummy food and new traditions. This year, we decided to add a new tradition from Simply on Purpose called, "I Love My Family Day". You choose 5-6 things your family loves doing together (hiking, biking, reading books, eating a favorite meal, it can be anything!) and do them all in one day. My kids loved this. It started as a blank sheet with the hearts numbered 1-6 on it and throughout the day, the boys would get a new heart to put on the chart and then we would do the activity. These are the six activities we chose: 1) Eat Heart Pancakes. I found this really cute  Heart Waffle Iron from Home Depot and we made chocolate banana heart pancakes with strawberries. 2) Dollar Store & Deliver Valentine's. After breakfast, I gave my kids our second heart. We love the Dollar Store. My boys each picked out a toy for themselves, and a few trinkets (slinkies, chocolate hearts, lip blowers, etc.) to deliver to...

I purchased the cutest Valentine Activity Packet from  Lesson for Little Ones  (Tina O'Block). For $3.50 you get eight or so simple to follow Valentine STEM Ideas along with recording sheets for the kids to fill out. Here are the experiments we did: Which liquid dissolves Candy Hearts the quickest? We tried warm water, cold water, warm soda, cold soda, oil and colored milk (my six's choice).  We estimated how many starbursts we could stack. The candy hearts I bought were the "sweet tart" version and they were too rounded to stack, so we used starbursts instead.   Next, we guessed what would happen if we added warm water to M&Ms. Would it bubble, dissolve, break into pieces or grow bigger? The results were beautiful! We also predicted if we thought different hearts would sink or float and then tested our guess. We talked about how we learned something new if our guess wasn't correct.
