Week 2: Prayer

Image
Morning Meeting - Tell the story of Zacharias & Elizabeth (Luke 1:5-25, 57-66). We talked about what we can learn from the story and how it relates to us - even when things seem hard, Heavenly Father helps us. Sometimes we need to wait for answers to our prayers, but they come. We talked about why we pray (gratitude, comfort, help) and I reminded my children of times their/our prayers have been answered. As we read from the scriptures, I drew stick figures on a piece of paper as a visual, with help ;) FAMILY NIGHT: 1) Review the story of Zacharias and Elizabeth from this morning. Have the kids tell dad about the story. 2)   Prayer Train - I felt like we needed to review the order of prayer, mostly for my three year old. We talked about each train and then played the Gratitude Prayer Game... 3) Gratitude Prayer Game with M&Ms - I showed my boys this M&M Gratitude Prayer Game  (create an account and download for free!) and we tal...

Week 2: Family History

Image
Morning Meeting - Read (or summarize) the lineage of Jesus found in Matthew 1:2-16. Afterward, I showed my boys a printed picture of our family tree (I found mine on familysearch.org) and we talked about the chart and our ancestors. FAMILY HOME EVENING: 1) Family Tree. Have the kids teach dad about our morning meeting. Then, explain that we're going to learn a few stories about our ancestors. 2) Tell Stories of our Ancestors: If you're on familysearch.org you can click on an ancestor and sometimes their picture or a brief history is available. I remember hearing the first story from my mom. I told two stories from my side and my husband told two stories from his side. We talked about our ancestors and we talked about what we can learn from them. John Duke: He lived at the time of the prophet, Joseph Smith. He and his family were forced to leave Nauvoo and suffered greatly across the plains. One night in particular everyone, including John Duke, were starving f...

Grandma's Orange Rolls

Week 1: Parable of the Ten Virgins

Image
As my husband and I discussed the best way to add "Come Follow Me" to our young family, we decided to focus on two stories or lessons each week. We plan to teach one on Thursday evening and the other on Sunday evening. These two nights are our new, official family nights. I currently have three boys - ages five, three and two months. My focus is to make these lessons a lot of fun, very hands on and include a lot of object lessons.  Before I begin, I'd like to mention that each morning while the boys eat breakfast we talk about one scripture story. We call it our "morning meeting" and it's quick - only ten minutes or so. There are so many great children's Book of Mormon or Bible story books that we enjoy reading together. We talk about the story and what we can learn from it. I'm trying to help my boys apply these stories into their lives, even at a young age. Since the new "Come Follow Me" manual was released, we decided to dedicate Th...

Gram's French Onion Soup

Image
This is another recipe my mother in law taught me to make this past week! We had so much fun in the kitchen! She makes this French Onion Soup every year on Christmas Eve. Ingredients: 2 cubes of butter 4 large onions, sliced into 1/4 inch strips 64 oz beef broth 16 oz chicken broth 4 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon salt 3/4 teaspoon pepper 2 tablespoons sugar Directions: 1) Add butter and onions into a large dutch oven over medium heat. Stir the onions until they are light brown and caramelized (this takes 15-20 minutes). Do not let the onions burn! 2) Stir in the broth, worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper and sugar. 3) When you're ready to serve, pour the soup into an oven safe bowl. Place two or three small slices of sourdough bagette (or four like I did in the picture above - I have a bread problem) on top of the soup followed by a mixture of grated parmesan and grated swiss cheese.  Place under broiler to slightly brown the ch...

Gram's Eggs Benedict

Every Christmas morning, my mother in law makes this. She visited last week and this is another meal we made together. Set aside. 2) Melt butter in a sauce pan. Once melted, turn the heat to low. SLOWLY add in the lemon mixture while whisking vigorously (you don't want the eggs to cook).  3) Continue to whisk until the mixture thickens. Remove from heat and add salt.  To make Eggs Benedict: Layer a toasted sour dough english muffin, slice of ham, poached egg and hollandaise sauce. Sprinkle pepper on top.

Prepping for Preschool!

Image
I can't help myself. Preschool activities call to me and even though I'm 31 weeks pregnant, I thought I could still manage to squeeze in a few small group preschool classes before the baby arrives. Two of my best friends in Oregon sent their darling girls to join me and my two boys (ages 4 & 3). We have a sun room on our main floor that I added a few things to make it feel a little more "preschool-y". Here's a list of where I printed/bought them and a few pictures: Printable Letter Train  (Kid Sparkz) - I printed and laminated these cards and they just happened to fit perfectly below our shelves. Colored Circles - We use these every day for circle time. Each student has their own color. I love the idea of writing their names on tape and putting the tape on the circle. A great name recognition activity every day that doesn't take up any extra time.  Weather Board  (Classroom Freebies) and Daily Schedule  (Lovely Commotion) - I thought this was so...
