Jungle Animal Excavation

Image
This activity was so much fun! Both my boys (ages 3, 1) really enjoyed excavating and playing with our jungle animals. We decided to do this activity in the tub to contain the mess and to easily wash off afterward. It was a perfect winter activity to do indoors that took up over an hour of our morning. Here's what you need (per child): jungle animals 4 envelopes  knox original gelatin  (the box I bought at the grocery store came with four envelopes inside.) excavating tools (we used play knives, tweezers, straws and a play spatula) How To Make The Mold : Pour one cup of cold water into a mixing bowl and sprinkle all four bags onto the water. Let it rest for one minute. Next, add three cups of hot water and stir to combine. In a separate bowl (or mold) spray the entire inside of the bowl with cooking spray. Place the jungle animals in the bottom of the bowl and then pour the gelatin mixture over the animals. Place the bowl in the fridge and allow to set overnigh...

Letter J: Booklist

Image
Here are our favorite books for Letter J: Peanut Butter and Jellyfish by Jarrett J. Krosoczka: This book was one of my three's favorites. It's about two friends named Peanut Butter and Jelly Fish who love to explore the ocean. They always brace themselves for when they pass Crabby's rock, because he makes unkind comments as they swim by. One day Crabby gets stuck in a lobster trap and Peanut Butter and Jelly Fish decide what would be best. This book teaches about kindness, apologizing and friendship.  The Giant Jam Sandwich by John Vernon Lord: This book was a house favorite! One day in Itching Down, four million bees swarmed to town. The townspeople have a meeting to decide what to do to get rid of the bees! The baker decides to make a giant sandwich with jam for the bees to eat, and get stuck in. I love the creative storyline.  Jellies by Twig C. George: This is a great book to introduce real life pictures and facts about jelly fish. The text...

"Stories of Jesus Advent Tree"

Image
One of my focus' as a mom at Christmas time is to teach my children of the true meaning of Christmas, which is Jesus Christ. One of my friends, Annie, told me about this advent idea - from Housewife Eclectic - last year and I've been waiting the past year to do it with my children (ages 3, 1). Starting December 1, and each night until Christmas, children learn a new story of Jesus through: A PICTURE - I love that the majority of the pictures were in our Gospel Art Book , although some nights I pulled them up online on my laptop for my kids to look at. We pointed out different details in the pictures before reading the scripture selection OR simply summarizing the verses for their attention spans. My kids also loved watching a few video clips of the stories, so I will include links to this option as well. SHORT SCRIPTURE SELECTION - these verses go along with the picture/video each night.  A SIMPLE ORNAMENT - the ornaments also go along with the picture and ...

Tutorial: Icy Insect Eggs

Image
Don't forget to check out how we made Frozen Dinosaur Eggs in our  10 Days of Dinos  unit! I want to start by saying how much fun my boys (ages 3, 1) had playing with icy insect eggs!  NOTE : You'll need to prepare these a day in advance as it takes time for the eggs to freeze. It's snowy and cold outside, so we decided to do this activity in the bath tub. I placed all the eggs in a plastic bin and my boys tried to get the insects out with their hammers and tools, salt and warm water. The colored eggs colored our tub water, which just added to the fun. Don't forget to check out our other Letter I Activities !   Supplies:  12 Plastic Insects (I found ours from The Dollar Tree).  12 large water balloons Food Coloring (optional) Salt (optional) Directions: 1) Place the insect and a drop of food coloring, if desired, inside the water balloon. I found it was easiest to put my index and middle fingers inside the balloon and sli...
