Fourth of July!

Fourth of July

For our morning scripture study, I couldn't help but read about Nephi's vision of the American Revolution from the Book of Mormon. 1 Nephi 13:13, 16-19.

In the morning, I made these really cute Yogurt Pops to have for a dessert after dinner. All you do is mix food coloring into vanilla yogurt. You want to layer white, red and blue yogurt into this cute popsicle mold with a turkey baster (or a small medicine syringe).

During the day, we read from our Magic Tree House Series about the American Revolution. I absolutely love these books. They are early chapter books and so educational. My boys (ages 6, 5) love them. The one of the left is an adventure book about two kids that can time travel in a magic tree house. The one on the right accompanies the book on the left, but is full of facts.

Before tubs, we played with these amazing Firework Sensory Play!

Taste Safe FIREWORK Sensory Play! A winner for ages 6, 5, and 1. For the 4th of July, we created our own “fireworks” in a sensory bin! It cleans up so easily with a hose. Our favorite sensory table and bins are from Ikea. You’ll also need some pop rocks. I found ours at the dollar store.

To make Oobleck (per bin):
2 cups corn starch
1 cup water
Food coloring (blue in one, red in one and no color in one).
Mix together. It will be hard to mix, because Oobleck becomes a solid when worked with.

Sensory play is an amazing way to learn. It isn’t only fun, but it teaches exposure to different textures and senses, works fine motor skills, imaginative play, science (liquid/solid) and in this case color mixing! We mixed the red and blue to make purple. Our only rule is to keep the Oobleck in the bins, and then I let my kids explore how they wish.
