Grandma's Orange Rolls

These are the most AMAZING orange rolls. My mom taught me how to make these on a recent Utah visit and I could eat the entire pan by myself. She often makes these for wedding or baby showers and everyone loves them! Rating: 10/10

Ingredients:
  • 2 packages dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 3 eggs, well beaten
  • 4 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2/3 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • Rind of 2 oranges, grated

Directions:

1) Soften yeast in 1/4 cup warm water. Let stand 10 minutes. Combine dissolved yeast, eggs, 2 1/2 cups flour, 1 cup warm water, shortening, sugar and salt in a large bowl. Beat until smooth. Add remaining flour to make a soft dough. Cover. Let rise until double in bulk (about one hour). Punch down and refrigerate overnight.

2) Three hours before baking, divide the dough in half and roll each half into a 1/2 inch thick rectangle. Mix together butter, sugar and orange rind. Spread mixture over the bottom half of the rectangle. Fold the dough in half. Use a pizza cutter and cut the dough into 12 equal strips. Take each strip and tie into a knot, hiding the ends of the knots underneath the roll (see pictures below). Place on a greased cookie sheet.

3) Let rise three hours. Bake in 350 degree oven for 10-12 minutes. Frost with powdered sugar frosting while hot. Yield: 2 1/2 dozen rolls.

Powdered Sugar Frosting:

Mix 3 cups powdered sugar, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 squeezed orange (taste), and 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream.
