Gram's French Onion Soup

This is another recipe my mother in law taught me to make this past week! We had so much fun in the kitchen! She makes this French Onion Soup every year on Christmas Eve.

Ingredients:

2 cubes of butter
4 large onions, sliced into 1/4 inch strips
64 oz beef broth
16 oz chicken broth
4 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon pepper
2 tablespoons sugar

Directions:

1) Add butter and onions into a large dutch oven over medium heat. Stir the onions until they are light brown and caramelized (this takes 15-20 minutes). Do not let the onions burn!

2) Stir in the broth, worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper and sugar.

3) When you're ready to serve, pour the soup into an oven safe bowl. Place two or three small slices of sourdough bagette (or four like I did in the picture above - I have a bread problem) on top of the soup followed by a mixture of grated parmesan and grated swiss cheese.  Place under broiler to slightly brown the cheese. Soup will be hot!
