Game: Your BODY is a TEMPLE.
Preparation: Print and cut out this activity from the Friend Magazine.
We scrolled through the temple gallery on churchofjesuschrist.org and talked about different characteristics of the temples (size, shapes, landscape, etc). We talked about how they all look different, but all are beautiful. Point out pictures of the insides of the temple and point out how nice and clean they look. Say things that will prep your kids for the game.
Play the game together as a family and relate how temples are so similar to our bodies:
- Each temple is a house of the Lord ---> Our bodies are the homes of our spirits and the Holy Ghost.
- Temples look different on the outside. They have different shapes and colors. All temples are beautiful ---> Our bodies come in all different shapes and colors. All bodies are beautiful and amazing.
- Every day, people work to care for the outside of the temple and keep it nice ---> We take care of the outside of our bodies by washing (hands and body), exercising, and sleeping.
- People clean the insides of the temples, too ---> We talked about eating healthy foods here (this is different than the game) and keeping our thoughts clean by watching and reading good things.
- Temples are used to do Heavenly Father's work ---> Our bodies are used to help others.
- Temples are special, sacred places that should be treated with respect ---> Our bodies also need to be treated with respect. If anyone ever hurts or touches our body in.way that makes you feel uncomfortable, talk with an adult.
1) "Healthy" Graham Cracker Temples: I like to use hot glue (instead of frosting) to hold the graham crackers together. My boys helped decide the "shape" of their temple and I helped them hot glued the graham cracker pieces together. Next, we took care of the outside of the temple and frosted it with store bought frosting. My boys wanted to keep it "clean" and not decorate with our "healthy" decorating options. Instead, some of the snacks made it into their tummies and I'm totally okay with that :) Our healthy options to decorate with including: nuts, dried fruit (bananas and craisins), pretzels, fruit snacks, fruit leathers, etc.
We glued the graham crackers onto parchment paper. Paper plates or tinfoil also work. |
This made me laugh. |
We used plastic zip-lock bags (cut a small hole in the bottom corner of the bag) to "pipe" the frosting. |
Expect lots of silly, lots of mess, and most likely a tub afterward. |
2) Respecting our Bodies. I checked out a bunch of books from the library in hopes to find one that can teach children more about body safety skills on a preschool level. The one my husband and I recommend and chose to read with our kids is: "My Body! What I Say Goes!" by Jayneen Sanders. It's so great. It starts by talking about emotions and how it feels to feel safe and unsafe. When we feel unsafe, it explains how our body feels and that we must tell an adult right away. It talks about private parts (including showing pictures of private parts) and how we need to tell an adult right away. You can get a summary of the book by clicking the pink link.
3) Temple Memory or Temple Bingo: Print them for free here on my Temple Marriage Family Night.
