Come Follow Me August 24-30 (Helaman 7-12)

This week, we are PLAYING GAMES to learn about three important principles from Come Follow Me.

The Lord wants me to Remember Him.

Helaman 7:20 Nephi wondered how his people had turned away from God and forgotten Him.

Read and discuss the scripture. How can we better remember Heavenly Father? Daily. Weekly. What happens when we remember Him? After your discussion...

Play one of these "remembering games" as you focus on remember the Lord:

Game: What's Missing?

Place a number of household items onto a tray. Younger children can start with 3-4 items. Older children you can do more to make the game more challenging.

Tell your child to have a close look at the items on the tray. Name them together.

Cover the items with a towel. Ask your child to close their eyes and as they do so remove one item from under the cloth.

Ask them to open their eyes, remove the cloth and tell you what’s missing!

Memory.

You can print Holy Ghost Memory Cards from my site, or play with a set you already have at home.

The Cup Game.

Place three identical, plastic cups in a line on the table, rim down. Place a pom pom or small rubber ball under one cup, allowing your child to see which cup the pom pom/ball is under. Shuffle the cups around by sliding them across the table, switching their positions quickly back and forth and all around. Once you have stopped moving the cups ask your child to identify which cup the ball is now under.

Prophets Testify of Jesus Christ.

Helaman 8: 13-23. Nephi testified that Jesus Christ would come, and he invited his people to repent and follow Him.

Talk about the role of prophets and play on of these game options below:

Game: Don't Eat Pete

Don't Eat Pete from Melanie's Library. We played this game last year with chocolate chips and my boys LOVED it. One person leaves the room. The people still in the room decided which person with be "Pete". The person that left the room comes back in and guesses "Is this Pete?" while pointing to the picture. If it is not, we say no. If it is, the person gets to eat the chocolate chip.

Game: Guess Who?

Prophet & Apostle Guess Who  from my site. These pictures fit into the newest version or Guess Who. For younger kids, you can talk about simple characteristics. For older children, you can ask about facts of the church leaders.

Prophets Animated Video.

Prophets Animated Video from Latter Day Kids. Although this isn't a game, the content is always so good I had to include this option here.

Special Witnesses.

Special Witnesses from my site. This was a five day preparation to General Conference, but you can use any of the ideas to learn about prophets. First, you learn about Book of Mormon prophets, then Joseph Smith, and then our current prophet and apostles.

I Will Obey Heavenly Father.

Helaman 10:11-12. Nephi's example of obedience can inspire the children you teach to obey the Lord.

Talk about obedience and why it's important. We always talk about how being obedient keeps us happy and safe. Focus on a specific principle (like the word of wisdom or reading scriptures) if you'd like. These games focus on following directions and would be a lot of fun to play. Relate to obedience.

Simon Says:

One person is designated Simon, the others are the players. Standing in front of the group, Simon tells players what they must do. However, the players must only obey commands that begin with the words “Simon Says.”

If Simon says, “Simon says touch your nose,” then players must touch their nose. But, if Simon simply says, “jump,” without first saying “Simon says,” players must not jump. Those that do jump are out.
