Special Witnesses & General Conference

This week is going to be a little different from what I normally share. In our family, we usually talk about something gospel related in the morning during breakfast. We read from The Friend Magazine, or from our Primary Scriptures Book, or a story from a simplified Book or Mormon, or read a couple verses from The Book of Mormon as I share something I learned from my scripture study. Here’s our daily plan this week.

Monday: Book of Mormon Prophets knew Jesus and were “Special Witnesses” of Him.

What is a prophet? A prophet is someone who is called of God to teach and testify of Jesus Christ. We call them “special witnesses.” Throughout history, God has always called prophets to teach of Christ — in the Bible, the Book of Mormon and even today. The Book of Mormon prophets knew of Christ and taught about Him, even before He lived on earth.

Play the Matching Game. Cut out the pictures and scripture references on page 3. Show the four pictures and ask your children what is happening in each one. Have your children take turns drawing a scripture reference. Read it aloud and match it to one of the pictures. Testify of Christ and how neat it is that prophets knew of Him even before He was born.

Tuesday: Heavenly Father has called a new “Special Witness” in our day — Joseph Smith.

At the end of the Book of Mormon, the people in the Americas (as well as in other areas of the world) rejected and killed many of the prophets. Heavenly Father removed prophets from the earth for a time, until He could see people were ready to listen to a prophet again. Hold up the pictures on page 5 and tell the story of Joseph Smith and the First Vision OR simply watch The First Vision and testify how Joseph Smith was called to be a “Special Witness” of Christ.

Wednesday: Learn about the Special Witnesses Today.

Why do you think God calls prophets and has them teach us about Jesus? He calls prophets because He loves us and wants us to know about Jesus. Jesus teaches us how to be happy and we can learn from His example (to be baptized, to be kind to others, to forgive, etc.). Jesus made it possible for us to repent and live with our families after death.

Just as prophets knew of Jesus Christ in the Book of Mormon, we have “special witnesses” or prophets in our day that teach us about Jesus Christ (show the picture of the prophet and apostles on page 6). Point to the prophet, his counselors and the twelve apostles. Watch this video as President Nelson shares his testimony of Christ: President Nelson: Special Witness of Christ

Thursday: Getting to Know the Prophet and Apostles.

Usually on Thursday evening, we do a family night. Tonight we are going to play games to learn about the apostles. Choose one or more of the games listed below to play at anytime this week:

Option 1: Don't Eat Pete! Click this link to see how to play this game. This is the game we are planning on playing this week. My boys are going to love it. You can use page 6 as the template for this game and find current facts about the prophet and apostles to use by clicking the link.

Option 2: Prophet and Apostle Memory or Go Fish: Use pages 8-9 to play these games.

Option 3: Prophet and Apostle Guess Who: These cards fit into the newest version of Guess Who.

Friday: General Conference Ideas.

Review the things you learned this week and discuss what it means to be a special witness of Christ. Remind the children how there were special witnesses in Book of Mormon times, with Jospeh Smith in our time and how are so blessed to have current special witnesses of Christ today.

Talk about what your weekend of General Conference will look like. I will share our ideas soon!
