Homeschool: Nocturnal Animals (Week 7)

We just completed our seventh week of homeschool. You can view our daily schedule (including which curriculum we use for math and reading) by clicking the link. Below you'll find the art and science activities we did this week - focusing on Nocturnal Animals. Here's the link to download the *FREE* Nocturnal Animal Booklet

MONDAY:
  • Book: Where are the Night Animals? by Mary Ann Fraser; While the World is Sleeping by Pamela Duncan Edwards
  • Activity: Nocturnal Booklet - Diurnal and Nocturnal
  • Supplies: Nocturnal PDF, pencil and crayons
  • Main Point: Learn about which animals are diurnal and nocturnal. Why.
After reading our books, we drew a sun and a moon in our nocturnal booklet.

TUESDAY:
  • Book: Bats by Gail Gibbons
  • Activity: Nocturnal Booklet - Draw a bat
  • Supplies: Nocturnal PDF, pencil and crayons
  • Main Point: Learn about bats. What do they do at night?
After reading our bat book, we drew a bat in our nocturnal booklet.

WEDNESDAY:
  • Book: Owls by Gail Gibbons; Owl Moon by Jane Yolen
  • Activity: Nocturnal Booklet - Draw an Owl; Dissect Owl Pellets
  • Supplies: Nocturnal PDF, pencil, crayons, owl pellets & supplies
  • Main Point: Learn about owls. What do they do at night?
After reading our owl books, we drew an owl in our nocturnal booklet.

In "Owls" by Gail Gibbons, she talks about owl pellets. Owls eat their prey whole, but can not digest fur and bones. Instead, they cough up a "pellet" full of fur and bones. We did an owl craft (shown below) and dissected synthetic pellets with friends. And a real pellet later that day. This was so interesting. You can read all about our afternoon Dissecting Owl Pellets by clicking the link.

THURSDAY:
  • Book: Prickly Hedgehogs! by Jane McGuinness
  • Activity: Nocturnal Booklet - Draw a hedgehog
  • Supplies: Nocturnal PDF, pencil, crayons, fork, brown paint
  • Main Point: Learn about hedgehogs. What do they do at night?
After reading our book, we drew a hedgehog in our nocturnal booklet. We went an extra step and used a fork and brown paint to make quills.

    FRIDAY:
    • Book: It's a Firefly Night by Dianne Ochiltree
    • Activity: Nocturnal Book - Draw a Firefly
    • Supplies: Nocturnal PDF, pencil and crayons
    • Main Point: Learn about fireflies. What do they do at night?
After reading our book, we drew a firefly in our nocturnal animal booklet.

Other Ideas: "Going Batty" - The Magic School Bus.

This is what our directed drawings looked like. I give my boys lots of leeway with using their own creativity. I simply give them ideas:
