Magic Treasure Hearts

These Magic Treasure Hearts are sure to wow you kids. Especially when the hearts start foaming and later melt to find a treasure gem inside! I found this idea from Fun at Home with Kids, and used a heart mold instead of star to go along with our service theme this week. Here's what you need:
  • Heart Mold
  • 1/4 Baking Soda (per color)
  • 1 teaspoon liquid watercolors (per color)
  • 1 teaspoon water (per color)
  • Treasures
  • Vinegar
  • Dish Soap - we used blue dawn

Directions:

1) Mix baking soda, liquid watercolors and water in a bowl. It takes a minute of stirring to come together. It will be a thick paste. Fill one heart mold up 1/3 the way and place a treasure in the mold before filling the remaining heart (see the purple heart below). Fill all the hearts and place mold in the freezer overnight.

2) When you're ready to play, fill your bin with a shallow amount of vinegar - you don't want the vinegar to be higher than the stars. Squirt in a couple teaspoons of dish soap and stir slowly. Bring the kiddos in and add the hearts to the bin. The hearts will start foaming immediately!

And Foaming... I love how the foam starts to turn the color of the stars.

Throw a high five in the mix..

Once the hearts begin to melt, your little one will notice there's something interesting inside the hearts...

A treasure! Talk about colors and science as you go and wash the gems and hands off in a tub afterward. The only complaint we had, was that the foam became really cold from the frozen hearts. Just expect that to happen, but STILL do this activity. So much learning and hands on fun involved! These treasures are great to save for a pirate theme later on in the year.
