FHE: The Birth of Jesus Christ

This lesson is from "The Birth of Jesus Christ (Christmas)" from the current Sunbeams Manual.

Prayer:

Attention Activity: Show newborn pictures (I showed one of each child and we guessed who they were) and talk about the births of your children. Point out how excited you were for each of them to be born.

Powerpoint - Slide 1 (Birth of Jesus). During this Christmas Season, we are celebrating someone's birth. Can you guess who it is? After some guesses, show the first powerpoint. That's right, Jesus. "What was the name of Jesus' mother (Mary)? What was the name of Jesus' father (Heavenly Father). Explain that Joseph was not Jesus' father. He was a good man chosen to take care of Jesus. The angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him about the important baby Mary would have. The angel told Joseph that Mary should be his wife." Click to view the powerpoint.

Powerpoint - Slide 2 (Angel & Mary). "Tell the story of the angel's visit to Mary, as found in Luke 1:26-35. Explain that the angel told Mary that she would be the mother of the Son of God, Jesus."

Powerpoint - Slide 3 (No Room at the Inn). "Tell about the journey of Joseph and Mary from Nazareth to Bethlehem, as found in Luke 2:1-7."

Powerpoint - Slide 4 (The Birth of Jesus Christ). Show the picture of the Birth of Jesus Christ and have the children each point out one or more things in the picture. Talk about the new star, where Jesus was born (stable), Jesus' bed (manger), and any other details.

Powerpoint - Slide 5 (The Announcement of Christ's Birth to the Shepherds). "Tell about the visit of the shepherds, as described in Luke 2:8-20."

Powerpoint - Slide 6 (The Wise Men). "Tell about the visit of the wise men, as described in Matthew 2:1-12. Explain that by time the wise men found baby Jesus, Joseph had found a better place for the family to stay and they were no longer in the stable. Remind the children that the wise men brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh."

Powerpoint - Slide 7 (Gift). "Explain that each Christmas as we celebrate the birthday of Jesus, we can give gifts to him. We can't give gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh like the wise men did, but we can give another type of gift. We give a gift to Jesus when we try to be like him. We are being like Jesus when we are kind to our family and friends."

Activity (Christmas Kindness Chain). "Help each child make a Christmas chain with several links. Have the children color their links (we used these Nativity Stamps!) and then staple their links together. Tell the children to put their chains somewhere in the homes where they will remind them to do kind deeds for others as gifts to Jesus. Challenge the children to do at least one kind deed each day until Christmas. Talk about examples of kind deeds." Note: We made the same amount of links as days until Christmas. We stamped paper before cutting out strips to link together. My four and two are so excited about their Christmas link and have been really motivated to do kind things each day as a gift for Jesus. At the end of each day, we tear off a link and write the kind deed and put it into our "Gifts of Jesus" present. We'll read all the kind deeds (our gifts to Jesus) on Christmas!

Testimony: "Explain that the birth of Jesus Christ was one of the most important things that has ever happened on earth. Express your love for Jesus and your desire to be like him, not only at Christmastime but all year long."
