Strength of the Lord

This simple and powerful object lesson is from the Book of Mormon course by Meck Mom. I bought the Book of Mormon monthly subscription and have learned so much from her insights and object lessons. Here's one we used this week!

In Mosiah 9, the Nephites and Lamanites are about to battle. The Nephites pray for help from the Lord, and rely on Him as they prepare to fight. The Lord answered their prayers, NOT by taking the battle away, but by strengthening them through it. Click to view the object lesson..

Step One: Blow up a Lamanite balloon and tie it closed. Draw a scary face on it if you want. Place the balloon over a candle and watch it pop! They did not have the strength of the Lord.

Step Two: Read Mosiah 9:17-18 and talk about how the Nephites went into battle with the strength of the Lord. Fill a balloon with 1/4 cup water. Explain the water represents things we can do to have the strength of the Lord. What are things we can do? Prayer, scripture study, church, etc. Blow up the Nephite balloon and tie it closed. Draw a happy face on it if you want. Place the balloon over a candle and watch as the balloon stays in tact and the fire of the candle goes out.

Step Three: Relate to our lives. Although we won't have a war, we will have challenges and hard things happen to us. As we draw close to Heavenly Father, He will also strengthen us. He often won't take our challenges away, but he will help us through them.
