Abinadi & The Ten Commandments

Opening Activity: What is a commandment?

Tell a story about one of your children who followed a rule at home and how it kept them safe. A few examples could be not touching the stove top, wearing a helmet when riding a bike, or holding hands across the street. Why do we have rules at home? (To keep us safe and happy). Heavenly Father also has rules for us to follow, called commandments.

Song: "Keep the Commandments" from the Children Song Book (page 46).

As you sing the song, ask your children to listen for two reasons why Heavenly Father asks us to keep His commandments (safety and peace).

Scripture: Mosiah 12:35-13:24.

When King Noah was in charge, he taught the Nephites to NOT follow the commandments. The Lord sent a prophet, named Abinadi, to warn them that if they didn't repent, their city would be destroyed. The Nephites did not repent. The Lord sent Abinadi a second time, and this time Abinadi was taken and thrown into prison. When he was able to speak to King Noah and his priests, Abinadi taught them about Jesus Christ and the ten commandments. Skim through the verses above and have your children hold up a finger for each commandment you read. Make sure to get all ten!

Finger Play:

Teach your children a simple way to remember the Ten Commandments with this finger play:

Video:

Watch the newest Book of Mormon Video (Mosiah 11-18) from ChurchofJesusChrist.org as you watch the story of Abinadi. Point out the Ten Commandments as he teaches them in the video. Point out that they were so important to Abinadi, that he would rather die than take back the words he taught to the Nephites.

Testimony: Bear your testimony about rules and commandments. Remind your children that rules and commandments are put in place not to burden us, but to make us safer and to have more peace in our lives.
