FHE: I am Thankful for Food & Clothing

This lesson is based on "I am Grateful for Food and Clothing" from the current Sunbeam's Manual.

Prayer:

Introduction Activity. Remind the children of the creation and how Heavenly Father and Jesus created trees and plants for us. On the trees and plants grow food for us to enjoy. Talk about some fruits and vegetables your children love to eat and where they come from. I bought a zucchini and apple from the grocery store earlier this week and cut them open, so my boys (ages 2, 4) could see the seeds inside. "Explain that Heavenly Father planned for plants to have seeds so the seeds could grow into more plants to provide food for us. When a plant such as a fruit or vegetable grow, more seeds are formed." Talk about what the seeds need to grow.

Powerpoint - Slide 2. "Tell the story of Elijah and the widow of Zarephath, as found in 1 Kings 17:8-16. Help the children understand that there was not enough food because there was no rain. Without the rain to bring water, no food would grow." Click to view the powerpoint.

Powerpoint - Slides 3-12. Explain that not all our food comes from plants. Talk about how some food comes from animals. Go through these slides asking, "Where does milk come from?" "Where do eggs come from?" Ask the same with bacon/sausage, taco meat (beef) and chicken nuggets. Here's a preview of the first four slides...

Powerpoint - Slide 13. Point out that food isn't the only thing we get from plants and animals. What is this boy doing? Getting dressed. "Have your children pantomime putting on articles of clothing such as a shirt, a dress, shoes, a coat and a hat. Explain that we get materials for making clothing and shoes from plants and animals.

Powerpoint - Slide 14-17. "Tell the children what plants or animals provide materials commonly used for clothing in your area. For example, cotton and linen come from plants, and silk comes from silk worms. Wool comes from sheep, and most leather comes from cows." Go through the slides as you discuss each item. I wish I had brought clothes made from cotton, linen, silk, wool and leather for the kids to touch.

Cotton Plant (top) & Linen Plant (Bottom)
Silk Worm
Wool from Sheep
Leather from Cows
Powerpoint - Slide 18. Teach the children the importance of thanking Heavenly Father for the food and clothing we have. Express gratitude and remind the children Jesus created these items under the direction of Heavenly Father. Show this slide.

Activity - Plant Seeds. Fill a cup with dirt and have your children plant a seed inside. We planted two dried black beans (for convenience in the winter) in each cup. Throughout the week, have your children water the beans and watch them grow! Here's our observation after two weeks..
