Week 22: Helping Others

Morning Meeting (Matthew 25:34-46). Read or summarize these verses and emphasize verse 40: "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." We talked about how Jesus lives in heaven and isn't able to be on earth to help everyone, so it's our job to help others. When we help others, we are also helping Jesus. Give your children specific examples of when they have helped each other and explain that it is also helping Jesus. It makes Jesus happy when we help others.

Family Home Evening:

1) Tell dad about our morning meeting.

2) Service Chutes & Ladders. Ask your children their favorite way to help others. "What is your favorite way to help mom?" or "What is your favorite way to help your brother?" Print this game in my Helping Others PDF (link at bottom of post). Roll a die and move accordingly. If you land on a space with a ladder, talk about what your player did to help another, and move up the ladder. First one to the end wins. Remind them when we help others, we are helping Jesus.

3) Other Options:
  • Secret Service Agent: Print a page of six hearts (per child) in my Helping Others PDF (link at bottom of post) and let your children decorate them with markers, crayons, stickers, etc. My boys love that this includes doing something "secret." Throughout the week, your children will do a kind deed and leave a secret service agent heart behind. Some options could be making someone else's bed, helping with the dishes, cleaning the toilet (I laughed out loud when I found one on top of the toilet), sending a letter to a loved one, leaving cookies for dad at work, etc. My boys love being "cookie bandits" and door bell ditching friends with cookies.

  • Cookie Match or Memory. Last year, we played a cookie memory game and my five loved it. I included these if you want to play a match or memory game and make cookies for a neighbor or friend afterward. Again, focus on how cookies are a form of service.
