Week 16: Easter & The Resurrection

Morning Meeting: This week, we are going to do something a little different with our morning meetings. Starting the Sunday before Easter, we are going to start our Easter Wreath (pictured at the bottom of the page). Each day of the week, children will learn about what Jesus did in the seven days prior to His resurrection. For instance, on the Sunday Jesus had his triumphal entry into Jerusalem. We will read the scripture, watch the related Bible video, and glue/staple the corresponding picture onto our wreath.

1) Resurrection Puzzle. Start by asking your children the main reason we celebrate Easter. My three said, "The Easter Bunny!" :) Although the Easter Bunny is fun and a symbol of Easter (birth), the real reason we celebrate Easter is Jesus' Resurrection. Talk about what resurrected means - when we die our body stays on the earth and our spirits go to heaven. When we are resurrected, they go back together again. Before the lesson, place the Resurrection Puzzle pieces in plastic Easter eggs and hide the eggs in the room. Have your children find the eggs and put the puzzle together.

2) He Is Risen Story. I found this idea in the nursery manual. You can print the pictures and summary (use double sided printing, so you can read the summary on the back while showing your kids the picture) in my Easter PDF. As you talk about the burial of Jesus and how they anointed Him with oil and spices, pause on the story for an object lesson while you make these amazing Resurrection Rolls...

3) Resurrection Rolls. I made the first roll and had my boys watch as I talked about the symbolism of the rolls (marshmallow - Jesus' Body; butter & cinnamon sugar - oil and spices on they placed on Jesus' body; roll - tomb) and then my boys made their own. The oven can represent three days. While the rolls are baking, finish the last two pages of the story. His body was gone from the tomb! What do you think will happen to Jesus' body (marshmallow) in the roll?  (When the rolls come out the marshmallow melts and is gone, just as Jesus' body was gone.) Where did His body go? Jesus' body and spirit came back together. He was resurrected. Emphasize that because of this, we can also be resurrected.

4) Resurrection Movie. While the rolls were baking, we started "He Is Risen" from the Bible Animated Series. About ten minutes in, our rolls were cooled enough and ready to eat. We paused the movie, talked about how the marshmallow (Jesus' Body) was gone and related it to how his body was gone from the tomb. We reminded our children how Jesus was resurrected and made it possible for us to be resurrected as well.
