Week 11: Sabbath Day

Morning Meeting (Jesus heals a man on the Sabbath -Matthew 12: 10-13). Focus on the phrase "It is lawful to do well on the sabbath days." Explain what the sabbath means and ask: What do you think it means to "do well" on the Sabbath? Discuss.

Remind children of the creation and how Heavenly Father rested on the seventh day - He is teaching us that we should also rest on the seventh day or the sabbath. On the sabbath we attend church to worship Heavenly Father and Jesus, but even when we come home from church we still need to think of them and make it a special day. We should not buy anything or spend any money unless it is an emergency. We should attend our church meetings unless we are sick. Our family has rules about the Sabbath day as well. Ask your children: What is your favorite thing to do on Sunday?

Family Night:

1) Teach dad about our morning meeting.

2) Brownie Sundae Object Lesson: This object lesson helps children visualize "doing well" on the Sabbath. You'll need:
  • Two brownies
  • Sundae Toppings (ice cream, hot fudge, caramel, sprinkles, whipped cream, etc.)
  • Other Items Your Children Like... but wouldn't be good on a brownie (ie: mustard, ketchup, salt, parmesan cheese, noodles, bread, etc.)
Cover the brownies and sundae toppings. Place the other items your children like on a table in front of them. Go through each item and ask if they like them. Bring out one of the brownies and actually squeeze and pour the items onto the brownie. As your kids eeeew and awwww, explain "I thought you liked these things!" Yes, we like them, but NOT on a Sundae. Now, bring out the second brownie and add the sundae toppings. Go through the toppings and other items and ask, "Is this good on a Sundae?" Are you sure you don't want mustard on here? You get the gist.

3) Sabbath Sorting Activity: Go through each of the cards and have your children sort them into things "Not Good on a Sunday" and "Good on a Sunday".

4) Treat: Eat Brownie Sundaes!
