Knight Costumes w/Pool Noodle Stick Horse & Jousting Stick!

Image
This summer, we are doing an "Around the World" series and learning about different countries from home. We have our printable passports with passport stamps and visited England this week! You can find the free passports and lesson plans by clicking the link. For our activities, we needed some knight costumes, horses and lances. I saved a lot of money by making our own DIY knight costumes! Watch the Video Tutorial @newswithnaylors Quick Links: Felt Pieces  (jousting horse and cross on knight costume) - they sell single sheets at Walmart for 23 cents. Pool Noodle (horses and jousting sticks from the Dollar Store) Net (jousting target, I cut out the netting from the Dollar Store) Hot Glue Gun  (horse and knight costumes) Gray Felt Fabric  (knight costumes)

An Instrument in God's Hands

Image
For Come Follow Me, we learned about the Sons of Mosiah and how they were instruments in the hands of God. They were instruments as they served others and taught others of Christ. We are each blessed with different strengths and talents to help others, but we need to be WILLING to share them, so God can use us as His instruments. The Book of Mormon video this week was really touching to me, and these object lessons from  @meckmomlife  Book of Mormon Course helped me plan a fun and engaging way to teach this principle to my children. Watch the Video Tutorial @newswithnaylors ➤ Introduction. Ask your children what an instrument is. Can it be played on its own or does someone need to play it? Can we be instruments? How can we be instruments spiritually?  ➤ Scripture Video - The Sons of Mosiah. Watch The Sons of Mosiah  from TheChurchofJesusChrist.org and talk about how the Sons of Mosiah were instruments by serving and teaching the Lamanites. How did the...

4 Ingredient Blueberry Pancakes

Image
Every summer I take my kids blueberry picking. I end up doing 90% of it, but the kids enjoy being there and it’s a great fruit exposure experience. These are clean, four ingredient pancakes, and are so easy to make in the blender. I don’t love blueberries on their own, but LOVE these blueberry pancakes! • • • 2 cups cottage cheese (we use good culture) 6 eggs 1 cup blueberries 2 cups rolled oats • • • Add ingredients to a blender (I always do the oats last, so it blends easier). You can half the recipe, but I like having the full recipe and eating them for 2 breakfasts. We refrigerate them and put them in the toaster or microwave to reheat the next morning. Makes 24 pancakes.

Priesthood Power

For at home church today, we talked about the priesthood (Alma 13). We did an intro activity and animated video from Latter Day Kids and an amazing object lesson with some lemons and electricity!  Quick Links: Lemon Lightbulb Kit  from Amazon Intro Activity & Animated Video  from Latter Day Kids Intro Activity: Lemon/Electricity Object Lesson:

The City of Ammonihah

Image
Watch the Video Tutorial @newswithnaylors ➣ Read Alma 9:4-5. Alma prophesies that the city of Ammonihah will be destroyed if the people do not repent. The wicked people don't believe this great city of Ammonihah could be destroyed in one day. Give each of your children a styrofoam cup. The cup represents the city of Ammonihah. Have them draw a picture of the city/people of Ammonihah with permanent marker while you read the next verses. ➣ Read Alma 14:8, 17-18, 22, 24-28. These verses explain how wicked the people were. They burned all the records of the church and those who believed they cast into fire. They put Alma and Amulek in jail and didn't give them any food, water or clothing. These verses also teach when the prison walls fall. Pour acetone into a pie tin until a half inch to an inch deep. The acetone represents wickedness. ➣ Read Alma 16:2, 9-10. The Lamanites come into the city of Ammonihah and destroy the city in one day. Alma's prophesy came to pass. Place the ...

Buttermilk Carrot Pancakes! (healthy & delish)

Image
We made our own butter and buttermilk and used them to make these amazing Buttermilk Carrot Pancakes! These taste so good (think spice cake!) and are naturally sweetened with maple syrup. I love that you make them in the blender for less clean up, and that there are 2 CUPS of carrots in 12 pancakes. These are my favorite way to get a veggie in! My six has never been willing to eat a carrot in his life until these came around.  Add the ingredients into a blender in order. I usually do a quick mix of the wet ingredients before adding the dry ingredients to help out the blender.  •  1 cup buttermilk*  •  1 egg •  1 teaspoon vanilla extract •  1-2 tablespoons maple syrup, depending on how sweet you want these •  2 cups finely grated carrots (matchstick carrots work well here) •  1 teaspoon baking powder •  1/2 teaspoon baking soda •  1/2 teaspoon salt •  1 teaspoon cinnamon •  1 cup whole wheat flour Makes 12 pancakes. These ...

Build Your Faith Jenga (Alma & Amulek)

Image
I've been waiting to play "Build Your Faith Jenga" until we are learning the story of Alma and Amulek. You can purchase these  Jenga Blocks  from Amazon. These blocks are a great learning tool for color recognition, color sorting, counting or adding/subtracting, and fine motor skills. We will definitely be using them for other things than the game in the future. I found this great idea family home evening idea from  Blue Skies Ahead . Watch the Video Tutorial on instagram @newswithnaylors 1) Watch this animated video on faith from Latter Day Kids. This video is so simple and spot on for kids to understand what faith is. It starts with a painting. "You don't see your painting at first, but you believe you can make a painting. You just know it." There are several examples, and then it then relates faith to having faith in Christ. 2) Share examples of when you kids have shown faith. And then talk about how Alma had faith to go back to teach people in Ammoniha...

EASY! DIY Soap Molds (made from Ivory Soap)

Image
Click to view the  Video Tutorial  @newswithnaylors I’ve always wanted to make our own soap molds, and this is the easiest way to do it! Make sure to use IVORY soap. Each bar of soap made two new shapes of soap. This activity was on the messier side, but totally worth it. My kids loved it. It helps to lay down a disposable table cloth and use disposable bowls for the kids to mix their soap in. I also learned the best shapes to use are the wide ones (like the star, heart or circle). You can view this tutorial and others on my instagram account:  @newswithnaylors . A worksheet to go along with the activity:  Ivory Soap Experiment

Exploding Volcano Baggies

Image
Watch a video tutorial here:  Exploding Volcano Baggies @newswithnaylors Exploding Volcano Baggies. We made these for our “ Day in Italy ”, but they would be fun anytime! It’s a new twist on the classic baking soda/vinegar experiment.  • • • 1️⃣ Draw a volcano on a sandwich zip lock bag. Set aside. • • 2️⃣ Rip a paper towel in half. Place 1 + 1/2 Tablespoons of baking soda in the middle of the paper towel. Fold the paper towel over the baking soda, like a present, so it doesn’t spill out (view tutorial). Set aside. • • 3️⃣ Fill volcano sandwich baggie with 3/4 cup vinegar. Carefully place the paper towel with baking soda into the baggie with vinegar. Quickly zip the baggie up, give it a quick shake and place it on the ground over a cookie sheet. It will explode within a few seconds.

Italian Fresco Art

Image
Watch Video Tutorial here:  Italian Fresco Art @newswithnaylors Italian Fresco. Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel using Fresco. First, you apply plaster and you paint it half-wet (and quickly!) to make the color permanent. We made these during our " Day in Italy ". • • • 1️⃣ Mix 1 cup  Plaster of Paris   and 1/2 cup of water in a disposable cup. You don’t want plaster going down your drain. Pour mixture onto a sheet of burlap (make sure the burlap is over tinfoil/cardboard, so it doesn’t leak onto the table). Spread plaster into a circle about 1/2 inch thick as shown in tutorial. • • 2️⃣ Allow to dry for 10-15 minutes. It should be a little wet still. If you touch it, it should barely come off onto your finger. Use a toothpick to draw shallow lines (optional), and paint with water color . • • • 3️⃣ Allow to dry 6-8 hours, or overnight. If you’d like, crack the fresco as shown in tutorial. Paint glue over the top, trying to get glue into the cr...
