Week 17: The Good Samaritan

Image
The Good Samaritan Items Needed: Items for the Object Lesson Die & Game Markers (a coin, button, etc.) Items to Print: Map of the Holy Land  from Churchofjesuschrist.org The Good Samaritan PDF (Teachers Pay Teachers) Morning Meeting (Luke 10:25-37 - The Good Samaritan): The purpose of this morning meeting is to familiarize my children with the story of the Good Samaritan. Show your children the map of The Holy Land and read the summary provided in the PDF. The summary explains how the Jews didn't like the Samaritans and when they traveled to Galilee, they would go around Samaria (which took much longer) instead of through Samaria. Summarize the verses as you tell the story using "The Good Samaritan" map and Character Cards. Family Home Evening: 1) Tell dad about morning meeting. 2) Object Lesson. I love this idea I found at Every Star is Different : "One thing that always touches my heart about this story is how much h...

Week 16: Easter & The Resurrection

Image
Morning Meeting: This week, we are going to do something a little different with our morning meetings. Starting the Sunday before Easter, we are going to start our Easter Wreath (pictured at the bottom of the page). Each day of the week, children will learn about what Jesus did in the seven days prior to His resurrection. For instance, on the Sunday Jesus had his triumphal entry into Jerusalem. We will read the scripture, watch the related Bible video, and glue/staple the corresponding picture onto our wreath. Print for Free:  Easter PDF Family Home Evening:  1) Resurrection Puzzle. Start by asking your children the main reason we celebrate Easter. My three said, "The Easter Bunny!" :) Although the Easter Bunny is fun and a symbol of Easter (birth), the real reason we celebrate Easter is Jesus' Resurrection. Talk about what resurrected means - when we die our body stays on the earth and our spirits go to heaven. When we are resurrected, they go back to...

Easter Meals & Traditions

Image
I am so looking forward to Easter this year - the food, the traditions we look forward to as a family, and the excitement in my children's faces. I am continually reminding myself to enjoy these years with young children and how excited they are with holidays! EASTER MEAL IDEAS: Herb Roasted Lamb  from Ina Garten. My mom made this lamb with the addition of carrots the past few Easters, and I love the symbolism of Jesus being the "Lamb" of God. I don't always care for meat, but this recipe is a winner and the seasoned roasted vegetables are so good. We are planning on making this on Sunday (the week before Easter Sunday) with the addition of Resurrection Rolls  (these rolls are a great object lesson on the resurrection). I thought this meal would be a nice introduction to celebrating the main reason we celebrate Easter - Christ and His Resurrection. Photo Credit: Oh, Sweet Basil Decorate Your Own Pizza Eggs . Week 14-15: Testimony of Jesus

Image
Morning Meeting: Peter Testifies of Christ (Matthew 16:15-17). Start by asking your children how they know something is real. We know this table is real, because we can touch it. We can know the sun is real because you can see it and feel its warmth. But, how can we know if something is real when you can't see or touch it? Read the verses above and discuss Peter's testimony of the Savior. Emphasize how Peter knew Jesus is the Son of God by the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost can help us to know something is true by the way we feel. When we do what is right or learn about something that is true, we feel good, warm or peaceful inside. This is the witness of the Spirit that what we're doing or learning about it true. Even though we haven't seen Jesus, we can know that He is real and that He loves us. Family Home Evening: 1) Teach dad about our morning meeting. 2) Growing our Testimony. A testimony doesn't come all at once. Elder Uchtdorf taught, "Inst...

Week 13: Jesus Walks on Water

Image
1) Picture of Jesus Walking on Water (Matthew 14:22-33). My mom has this picture hanging up in my old bedroom and it was perfect to use for our family lesson tonight. I pointed out Jesus, the boat and Jesus' friends (disciples) in the boat and briefly told the story. We talked about faith in Jesus and how Jesus can help us. I asked the children, do you think the disciples could walk on water if they had faith in Jesus? Let's find out... 2) Watch the video  Wherefore Didst Thou Doubt?  Talk about what caused Peter to be afraid (big waves, thunder, and rain). Ask the children to tell about times when they felt afraid and share what helped them. Help them see that faith in Jesus Christ helps us overcome fear.  3) Act out Peter Walking on Water. The object of this activity is for "Peter" to walk across the water keeping his/her eyes on Jesus without being distracted. Even when the rain (snowballs/crumbled paper), thunder (pan lid and spoon banging) and ...
